About Dorset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dorset last autumn – leaves turning that gorgeous coppery gold, the air already nipping at my cheeks through the car window. It was mid-October, you see, that sweet spot where summer’s warmth lingers just enough to fool you, but winter’s whisper reminds you it’s time to layer up. Me and my mate Sarah had booked this cracking little spot called Deluxe 2, a cosy two-bedroom cottage right on the edge of Dorchester, perfect for a three-day getaway. We were buzzing, playlists sorted, but of course, I managed a classic me-mishap en route: took a wrong turn onto some narrow B-road near Puddletown, ending up behind a tractor trundling along at snail’s pace. “Bloody typical,” Sarah laughed, as golden leaves swirled in its wake like confetti from a harvest festival. Twenty minutes later, we were back on track, the mishap already turning into one of those stories we’d retell over pints.

Pulling up to Deluxe 2 around teatime, the seasonal magic hit us full force. The cottage sat nestled in a quiet close, its decking overlooking a shared garden that was a riot of autumn colour – flaming maples and rusting ferns framing the whole scene like a postcard from the Jurassic Coast hinterlands. Dorchester’s just a hop away, mind, all those honey-stoned Georgian buildings glowing in the low sun, but here it felt worlds apart, proper rural idyll. We parked up easy (one of the perks listed, and boy, did we appreciate it after that tractor saga), and as we unloaded, the chill settled in earnest. That October breeze carried the earthy scent of damp leaves and woodsmoke from someone’s chimney nearby – pure Dorset in fall, innit?

Stepping inside for those first impressions, it was love at first sight. The open-plan living area welcomed us with a wood-burning stove already set with kindling, begging to be lit against the encroaching dusk. “This is what autumn holidays are made for,” I grinned, kicking off my wellies. The kitchen was kitted out brilliantly – granite worktops gleaming, a proper Aga-esque cooker that promised hearty stews, and all the mod cons without losing that homely vibe. We cracked open a bottle of red (local Dorset red, naturally, nabbed from a farm shop on the way), and while Sarah unpacked, I fiddled with the stove. First flames crackled to life, casting a warm flicker over the plush sofas and that massive telly – ideal for cosy nights in as the clocks ticked towards Bonfire Night.

Upstairs, the bedrooms were spot on. Our en-suite double had a rainfall shower that steamed up instantly, chasing away the drive’s chill, and the views from the window? Fields rolling out under a sky streaked with pink and orange, the sort of sunset only autumn delivers without the summer heat haze. Sarah’s twin room was just as comfy, all crisp linens and little touches like fluffy towels folded just so. But it was the decking that stole the show for first impressions. We stepped out as twilight fell, mugs of tea in hand, wrapped in blankets against the crisp air. The garden was alive with the rustle of falling leaves, a few hardy asters still blooming defiantly, and in the distance, the faint low of cows heading home – timeless Dorset sounds amplified by the season’s hush.

That first evening, as we grilled sausages on the portable barbie (braving the chill for that smoky char), I had a proper moment of reflection. Sat there, feet up on the decking, watching the stars pop out earlier than summer ever allows, I thought about how this time of year strips things back. No scorching beach crowds at nearby spots like Weymouth (thankfully just a cheeky drive if we fancied it later), just this quiet beauty, forcing you to savour the simple stuff: crackling fire, mate’s banter, and the land breathing out after summer’s frenzy. The mishap on the road? Forgotten. Deluxe 2 in autumn Dorset had us hooked from the off – a proper tonic for the soul. Can’t wait to go back when the frosts glitter.
