About Dorset
I finally made it to Corvesgate after what felt like the scenic route from hell, courtesy of my sat-nav deciding to play hide-and-seek with Weymouth's one-way system. Picture this: me, the wife, and our two lads crammed into the Volvo, bags piled high like we'd packed for a month in the Outer Hebrides rather than a cheeky three-day jaunt. We'd nipped off the A35, dodging Jurassic Coast caravans, when the GPS chirped, "Turn left in 200 yards." Except there was no left—just a cheeky "No Entry" sign staring me down. Cue a five-point turn in a residential street narrower than my waistline after Christmas, with a local pensioner giving me the side-eye from her garden gnome empire. "Dad, you're worse than Google Maps," piped up nine-year-old Finn from the back, stifling giggles. Classic family holiday start—nothing says 'relaxed break' like a bit of automotive farce.

Pulling up to Corvesgate just before tea-time, I was proper chuffed. Tucked away in a quiet spot off Weymouth's buzz, this little lodge felt like it'd been waiting for us, all cosy and unpretentious. The owner, a lovely chap called Mike, handed over the keys with a grin and a "Mind the step—it's tripped up many a weary traveller." We bundled in, dumping bags in the hallway that smelled faintly of fresh linen and sea salt. First impressions? Blimey, it was spot-on for our vibe: a proper family bolthole, with a lounge that screamed "kick off your shoes and flop." The wood-burner was primed with kindling (mental note: light it later for smugness points), and the kitchen was kitted out like a telly chef's dream—full-size cooker, quirky mugs, and a fridge that hummed contentedly, already stocked with milk and a welcome note scribbled on holiday innuendo-free postcard.

The lads wasted no time claiming territory. Finn and seven-year-old Jake beelined for the two twin rooms upstairs, shrieking about the "epic bunk beds" (they're not really bunks, but in kid logic, any bed over three feet off the ground qualifies). Their windows overlooked a sliver of garden, perfect for spying on neighbourhood cats plotting world domination. Sarah and I bagged the master with its kingsize bed—fluffy pillows, the works—and a cheeky en-suite that had her cooing about the rainfall shower. "This is lush," she said, already mentally unwinding. Me? I was eyeing the private hot tub out back, half-hidden by a laurel hedge, thinking it'd be our evening reward after wrangling the chaos merchants.

That first evening set the tone for lodge life loveliness. We cracked open a Tesco-finest fish pie (Weymouth's seafood influence, innit?), scoffing it at the dining table while the sun dipped over the rooftops. Chaos ensued when Jake knocked over his juice—cue paper towels and muffled swearing under my breath—but that's the beauty of these spots, isn't it? No fuss, just real life with a side of charm. Post-dinner, we ambled five minutes down to Weymouth Harbour, the sea breeze whipping up as gulls squawked overhead. The beach huts glowed in the twilight, and the kids paddled in the shallows, trousers soaked, laughing like hyenas. I stood there, hands in pockets, watching them chase waves, and had one of those dad moments—y'know, the quiet reflection where you think, "Blimey, amid the spills and sat-nav bollocks, this is what it's about. Simple stuff, family time, no rush."

Back at Corvesgate, we fired up the hot tub under a starry Dorset sky—no light pollution here, just pure magic. Bubbling away with a cheeky GandT in hand, Sarah and I chatted bollocks while the boys conked out on the sofa to a dodgy pirate DVD. First impressions sealed it: this place nails that relaxed family break, all simple pleasures laced with a dash of delightful disorder. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but right now, I'm sorted.
