About Dorset
Finally rolling into Swanage just as the sun dipped low over the Purbeck Hills, we spotted the cottage tucked away in a quiet nook off the high street. Bobbin Cottage—quaint as a postcard, with its thatched roof (or close enough to it) and stone walls that screamed proper Dorset charm. It’s one of those proper little gems, right in the heart of things but cosy enough to feel like your own private bolthole. We parked up on the narrow street, unloaded the boot in a flurry of cool bags, wellies, and a rogue football that immediately rolled under the car. Chaos from the off, but the good kind. Stepping inside for the first impressions? Blimey, it was like the cottage had been waiting for us with open arms. The living room hit you first—low-beamed ceiling that had me stooping like a guilty schoolboy, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire (we chucked some logs on later, naturally), and those squashy sofas perfect for flopping onto after the drive. The kids—two under tens, wired from the car—dashed straight to the kitchen, eyes lighting up at the Aga that looked like it could rustle up a Sunday roast single-handedly. “Can we make hot chocolate, Mum?” they chorused, already rifling through the cupboards for mugs. I reckon that’s the magic of these cottage stays: instant home-from-home vibes, with a side of “ooh, what’s this quirky bit?” Upstairs, the bedrooms were a treat—snug doubles with views peeking out to the rooftops and a glimpse of the sea if you craned your neck. Ours had this funny old wardrobe that creaked like a haunted ship, which sent the little ones into giggles, pretending it was hiding pirates. First impressions-wise, it nailed that relaxed family break feel: nothing flash, just simple pleasures like the fresh linen smelling of lavender and the windows that let in the gentle whoosh of Swanage’s evening breeze. We unpacked in record time, the boot-spillage forgotten, and cracked open a bottle of local Purbeck cider while the kids claimed their spots. That first evening set the tone perfectly. After a whip-round to the Co-op for essentials (bread, cheese, and more crisps than any human should admit to), we wandered five minutes down to Swanage Bay. The beach was right there, all golden sand and calm waves lapping under the cliffs—proper Jurassic Coast postcard stuff, without the crowds. The kids paddled about, shrieking as the chilly English sea nipped their toes, while we sat on the pebbles, toes buried in, sipping tea from a thermos. Light chaos ensued when one nipper lost a flip-flop to the tide, leading to a soggy trudge back barefoot. Hilarious now, mortifying then. Sitting there as the sun set, pink and orange streaking over Old Harry Rocks just visible in the distance, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life’s mad rush back home—work emails, school runs, the lot—felt a million miles away. Here was us, in this unassuming little cottage, embracing the lodge life muddle: wrong turns, creaky doors, sandy feet everywhere. It reminded me that the best holidays aren’t about grand plans; they’re these tiny, messy joys that knit you closer. Bobbin Cottage? Spot-on for it. Can’t wait to go back. |
