About Dorset
Pulling up to Beside The Sea just before teatime, I was smitten straight away. Tucked away in a peaceful spot on the edge of Bridport, this cosy lodge felt like it had been waiting just for me. The garden wrapped around it like a hug – lush and wild in that proper English way, with lavender buzzing with bees and a hammock swaying gently between two apple trees. I dumped my bags in the car boot, grabbed my key from the secure box, and stepped inside. Blimey, it was perfect. Compact but ever so inviting, with a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy evening crackle, squishy sofas piled high with cushions, and a kitchen that screamed "whip up a cuppa and forget the world". The views from the windows? Straight out to rolling fields hinting at the sea beyond – not quite on the beach, but close enough to feel the salt in the air. First impressions? Pure bliss for doing sod all, which was exactly what I needed. After that drive, I flopped onto the sofa with a sigh of relief, cracking open a book I'd been meaning to read for months – some dog-eared P.G. Wodehouse for light relief. The sun dipped low, painting the garden golden, and I just... stayed there. No itinerary, no grand plans. Dinner was a simple affair: fresh scones from the local bakery in Bridport (popped down the road for those – buttery heaven), clotted cream, and strawberry jam slathered on while perched at the little garden table. A pint of Dorset cider from the fridge to wash it down, and I was sorted. Watched the birds flit about, listened to the distant crash of waves from West Bay – it's only a couple of miles away, but who needs to rush? Day two dawned misty and soft, the kind of Dorset morning that whispers "stay put". I pottered in the garden, deadheading a few roses and sinking into that hammock with my book again. Hours vanished – properly slowed down, you know? No emails pinging, no deadlines nipping at my heels. It's funny how we pack our lives so full back home, innit? Here, amid the quiet hum of the countryside, I had a proper moment of reflection. Staring at the clouds scudding over, I realised I'd been running on fumes – work, mates, the endless scroll. This lodge, with its gentle nudge towards idleness, was like a reset button. Made me promise myself to carve out more of this nothingness in the daily grind. By afternoon, a gentle amble called – nothing strenuous, just a meander along the nearby footpaths towards the cliffs at West Bay. The Jurassic Coast path is right there, dramatic as anything, but I took it slow, stopping to skim stones on a pebbly cove and breathe in that briny tang. Back at the lodge, I lit the stove early (cheeky, even in summer), brewed tea, and sprawled out again. Evening brought a light drizzle – perfect excuse to hunker down with a board game from the shelf (Scrabble, naturally – I trounced myself spectacularly) and leftovers from a fish and chips takeaway from town. Bloody marvellous. Third day was more of the same lazy magic. Breakfast in the garden with blackbirds for company, then a bimble to Bridport's harbour for fresh crab rolls – sat on a bench, feet up, watching boats bob. Returned to read under the pergola, the world fading to a pleasant blur. Leaving felt wrong, but those first impressions? They'll linger. Beside The Sea isn't about ticking boxes; it's a bolthole for savouring the sweet sod-all of life. If you're knackered like I was, book it – you won't regret slowing right down. |
