I finally made it to the 3 Bed Lodge in West Stour after a bit of a faff on the drive down from the Midlands. Picture this: I'd packed the car the night before, all smug with my playlist of summery tunes, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Blandford Forum. It insisted on rerouting me down some narrow B-road that turned out to be more pothole than tarmac, and I ended up with a muddy splatter up the side of the car that looked like I'd been mud-wrestling cows. Classic me – overpacking snacks and forgetting the windscreen scraper. Still, it was only a 20-minute detour, and by early afternoon, I was trundling up that quiet lane into West Stour, the Dorset countryside unfolding like a proper postcard.

Pulling into the drive of the lodge felt like slipping into a warm bath after a long day. It's this cracking little timber-clad haven, tucked away in its own pocket of peace, with rolling fields stretching out behind it. The owner, a cheery local chap, handed over the keys with a nod to the wood burner and a warning about the cheeky pheasants that roam the garden. I dumped my bags in the spacious open-plan living area – think plush sofas begging for a slump, a telly for rainy afternoons (though who needs it with views like these?), and a kitchen kitted out with everything from cafetière to that essential jug of milk already in the fridge. Proper thoughtful touch, that.

First impressions? Blissful. I cracked open the French doors straight away and stepped into the garden, which is basically a wildish haven of lavender beds, a couple of apple trees heavy with fruit, and a patio set under a pergola that's perfect for doing sod all. I plonked myself down with a cuppa, feet up, and just watched the world go by. No deadlines, no emails pinging – just the hum of bees and the odd tractor chugging in the distance. It's the kind of spot that makes you realise how wired you've been; I caught myself smiling at nothing, which is probably a sign I needed this more than I thought.

That first afternoon set the tone for lazy perfection. I wandered all of 200 yards to the edge of the garden, peering over the hedge at the neighbouring fields where sheep were doing their best impression of fluffy clouds. No grand hikes or tourist traps here – West Stour's too tucked away for that malarkey, and honestly, why bother? I rustled up a simple lunch of cheese on toast (Dorset cheddar from the local shop I'd spotted en route, naturally), then cracked open my book – some dog-eared detective novel I'd been meaning to finish for months. Curled up on the sofa with the sun slanting through the windows, I lost hours without even noticing. It's funny how the simplest things hit different when you're unplugged; that novel felt like a blockbuster, and the odd rustle of leaves outside was better than any Netflix score.

Evening rolled in gentle as you like. I lit the wood burner – flames dancing like they were auditioning for a fairy tale – and heated up a ready meal with a glass of red from the offy bag. Peeking out at the starry sky (Dorset does dark skies like nowhere else), I had one of those quiet moments of self-reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind of meetings and must-dos, innit? But here, in this cosy nook, I realised slowing down isn't slacking off – it's recharging the soul. No FOMO, just me, the lodge, and the joy of bugger all on the agenda.

By bedtime in one of the comfy king-size rooms upstairs – crisp sheets, views over the fields – I was already plotting the next two days of similar indolence. A gentle amble to the village pub for a pint, maybe a nosey around the churchyard, or just more garden lounging with birdwatching binoculars. Who needs more? This three-day jaunt's already my favourite kind of holiday: the one where arriving feels like the main event, and doing very little is the absolute highlight.
