About Dorset
Rocking up to the lodge around teatime, the place was a proper gem: tucked in a quiet spot just off Bridport’s edge, with its two cosy bedrooms, a cracking little kitchen, and a garden that screamed “put your feet up”. First impressions? Spot on. The owners had left fresh milk and biscuits—proper thoughtful, that. But it was the locals who turned arrival into a right old chinwag fest, making the whole first evening feel like we’d gatecrashed a village reunion. No sooner had we unpacked than old Reg from next door popped over, leaning on his fence with a fag dangling and a grin wider than the Jurassic Coast. “You the London lot?” he barked, eyeing our Hire car like it was a spaceship. Reg, retired fisherman turned self-appointed neighbourhood watch, regaled us with tales of Bridport’s rope-making heyday—did you know they used to twist hemp right here for the Navy? “None of your fancy polyester,” he scoffed, demonstrating a knot that’d hold a battleship. Sarah asked about the best pub grub, and off he went on a 20-minute rant about the George Hotel down the road, swearing their scampi’s “better than a Bournemouth belle’s kiss”. We were in stitches—his Dorset drawl turning “scampi” into something poetic. “Stay clear of the tourists on West Bay beach,” he winked. “They’re like seagulls—loud and nicking your chips.” We nipped out for a pint at the local, the Bull Inn, barely a stroll away, and that’s where we met Tina, the landlady with hair like a bonfire and opinions sharper than a gaff hook. “First time in Bridport?” she asked, plonking our ales down with a thud. Aye, we nodded, and she launched into the mother of all local lore. Tina’s family’s been here donkey’s years, and she’s got the scoop on everyone: the bloke who swears his nan’s ghost haunts the allotments (near as dammit to the lodge), and the time the harbour flooded after a storm, turning the high street into an aquarium. “Quirky lot, us Dorseters,” she chuckled, pulling up a stool. “But we look after our own—and you lot, by the looks.” Her yarn about the annual pantomime at the Electric Palace—where the mayor once tripped over his own sword—had us howling. Gentle soul, really, under the banter; slipped us a doggy bag of pasties “for the morning constitutional”. Back at the lodge that night, supping tea in the garden as the sun dipped behind the hills, we bumped into young Jake, the lad who does the gardens round here. Barely 20, with a man-bun and a tattoo of a fossilised ammonite, he was trimming the hedges when Sarah waved him over. “Proper dino country this,” he said, eyes lighting up. Turned out Jake’s a fossil nut, spending weekends at Charmouth Beach fossicking for relics. “Found a baby ichthyosaur tooth last week—size of your nail!” He sketched it on a napkin, all enthusiasm, warning us about the “fossil police” who chase off amateurs. Charming kid, dead passionate; made me reflect a bit, sat there with the sunset glow. Here I am, pushing 45, still chasing plastic bags down hedges, while this lad’s unearthing ancient seas. Dorset’s magic, innit? Reminds you to slow down, chat more, laugh at the daft bits. By bedtime, the lodge felt like home already—those quirky characters weaving their spell. Reg’s knock-the-next-morning promise of “proper cream for your scones” had us buzzing. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Dorset’s not just scenery; it’s the folk who make it sing. Can’t wait for day two. |
