About Dorset
I finally made it to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in Stour Row after a bit of a faff on the drive down from the Midlands. It was meant to be a straightforward three-hour jaunt through the A303, but no, I managed to take a wrong turn near Blandford Forum and ended up looping round some narrow lanes with hedges taller than my car. Picture me, swearing under my breath at the satnav while the kids in the back seat – little Ollie and Mia – chorused "Are we there yet?" every two minutes. Classic dad fail, but hey, it added a dash of adventure to what was supposed to be a chilled family break in Dorset.

Pulling up to the lodge just as the sun dipped low over the Stour Valley, I was knackered but buzzing. Tucked away in this peaceful spot near Stour Provost, it's proper rural bliss – think rolling fields, the odd sheep bleating in the distance, and not a hint of traffic noise. The lodge itself is a gem: a snug wooden haven with that classic Dorset charm, all pitched roof and flower tubs spilling over with geraniums. We parked right outside on the gravel patch, crunching our tyres like we'd arrived at our own secret hideaway. Unlocking the door with the key in the flowerpot (old-school, innit?), the first whiff hit me – fresh linen and a faint woodsmoke tang from the log burner. Bliss.

First impressions? It's tiny but perfect for us lot. One bedroom upstairs with a double bed that could've swallowed us whole, and a camp bed we rigged up for Ollie without too much protest. Mia claimed the sofa bed downstairs like a queen, complete with her stuffed unicorn. The open-plan living area is the heart of it: compact kitchenette with everything you need for beans on toast (kettle on, toaster pinging – sorted), a squishy corner sofa facing a telly that's probably older than me, and French doors opening onto a private patio. We stepped out and there it was – our own little slice of countryside, with views across meadows towards the River Stour. Birds twittering, butterflies flitting about. I cracked open a tin of fizz from the offy in Sturminster Newton (just a quick five-minute drive away) and we toasted our arrival. "To lodge life!" I said, feeling like a proper explorer.

But oh, the chaos kicked in straight away, in the best way. Unpacking was a laugh – suitcases exploded across the floor, Mia's wellies went missing under the table, and Ollie discovered the joy of bouncing on the sofa till it groaned in protest. I tried to play the organised parent, stacking tins in the cupboards, but ended up spilling teabags everywhere. "Dad, you're rubbish!" Ollie giggled, and I couldn't argue. We rustled up supper from local bits I'd grabbed en route: pasties from the bakery in Stour Row village, proper Dorset apple cake that tasted like nan used to make. Sat round the tiny table, munching as the sky turned pink, it felt like we'd slipped into a slower world. No schedules, no rush – just us, faffing about in our pyjamas by 7pm.

That first evening, as I sat on the patio with a cuppa, watching the kids chase fireflies (or were they glow worms? Dorset magic either way), I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home's all hustle – work emails at midnight, school runs that feel like marathons. Here, in this unpretentious lodge, everything just... paused. The gentle chaos of family spills, the simple joy of a shared pasty and a starry sky – it's these bits that recharge the batteries, innit? No grand plans needed; just being together in this pocket of Dorset paradise. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but right now, first impressions have me hooked.
