About Dorset
First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The owner, a chap called Reg – think classic Dorset farmer with a flat cap and a handshake like a vice – met me at the gate. "You the London lad?" he barked, eyeing my mud-splattered boots. I nodded, and he launched into a ten-minute rant about how the council's ruining the lanes with their potholes. "Worse than badgers digging 'em!" he chuckled, before handing over the keys and insisting I try his homemade sloe gin. One sip and I was hooked – sharp as a tack, with a warmth that promised a good night. Reg's the sort who knows every blade of grass round here; he pointed out the best pub five minutes down the road and warned me about the "ghost sheep" that wander at dusk. Proper quirky, that one. Unpacking took about five minutes – the lodge is compact but spot-on for one, with a comfy bed piled high with quilts and a kitchenette that had fresh eggs waiting from Reg's hens. I cracked one into a pan, feeling dead chuffed, when there was a knock. It was Mabel, Reg's neighbour, popping over with a Tupperware of her famous flapjacks. She's tiny, about 80 if she's a day, with a laugh like a foghorn and stories that could fill a book. "Heard you arrive, dearie," she said, plonking herself on the sofa uninvited. Turned out she'd lived here 60 years, seen Sherborne grow from a sleepy town to whatever it is now. We got chatting about the locals – like old Bert from the farm up the lane, who swears his cows predict the weather better than the BBC. "Bert's got a cow called Doris," Mabel winked, "predicts rain by staring at the postie. Spot on last week!" I nipped out for a wander that first afternoon, not far, just along the hedgerows to the village edge. There was young Tom, the postman on his bike, who stopped for a yarn about the time he delivered to the wrong vicar and ended up in a tea party with the Women's Institute. "They quizzed me on corgis for an hour!" he howled, his Dorset drawl thick as clotted cream. Back at the lodge, as the sun dipped, I bumped into Reg again – he'd come to "check the fence," but really it was another sloe gin session. He regaled me with tales of Sherborne's castle ghosts and the annual wassail, where they bless the apple trees with cider and song. "You should've seen Madge last year – 92 and dancing on a barrel!" Sat there on the lodge porch that evening, mug of tea in hand, watching the mist roll in, I had one of those quiet moments. Me, the city boy who's always rushing, suddenly proper content just listening to these characters spin their yarns. Dorset folk like Reg, Mabel, Tom – they're the heartbeat of places like this, aren't they? No pretence, just stories and a shared pint. That first day set the tone: quirky chats over gin and flapjacks, with the lodge feeling like a mate's spare room. If you're after a bolthole where the locals make the magic, this Sherborne spot's your ticket. Can't wait to go back – potholes and all. |
