About Dorset
First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The owners had left fresh milk and biscuits on the kitchen table – proper thoughtful – and the wood-burning stove was begging to be lit. I dumped my bags, laced up my wellies, and headed out for a wander before the light faded. Milton Abbas is made for walking, with paths snaking off in every direction towards the downs. I took the gentle stroll up to the ruins of the old abbey, just a short hop from the lodge. The air was crisp, with that earthy Dorset smell of wet grass and wildflowers, and the village high street – the longest in England, they say – stretched out like a secret only locals know about. But oh, the British weather – it's got a mind of its own, hasn't it? Day one started promisingly bright, so I plotted a hearty hike along the Milton Abbas Downs trail, maybe four miles looping back through Hambro Woods. Packed my flask (lid on tight this time), grabbed an apple from the lodge's fruit bowl, and off I went. The views were stunning: chalk hills glowing white under the sun, sheep dotted about like fluffy clouds come to earth. I even spotted a few hares boxing in the distance – proper wildlife porn for a city lad like me. Then, wouldn't you know it, the sky turned moody mid-stride. One minute I'm striding along whistling, the next it's lashing down with that proper Dorset drizzle that soaks you to the bone without you noticing at first. Plans in tatters, I ducked under a massive oak for shelter, laughing at myself as I tried to wring out my socks. Self-reflection moment: standing there, rain pattering on the leaves, I realised how much I needed this – no signal, no emails, just me and the elements forcing me to slow down. Instead of pushing on, I improvised: a muddy scramble down a sheep track back to the village, emerging triumphantly at the thatched Black Bull pub for a pint of local Badger ale. The barmaid chuckled at my drowned-rat look and sorted me with a towel. Proper community spirit. Day two, the weather played nice again – blue skies, a gentle breeze – so I ventured out on the Riverside Walk along the River Allen, barely a mile from the lodge. Flat and easy, perfect for birdwatching: kingfishers flashing blue, herons stalking the shallows. Felt like I'd stumbled into my own Attenborough doc. But by noon, clouds rolled in thick as clag, thunder rumbling over the Purbeck Hills in the distance. Hike abbreviated, I retreated to the lodge's private patio (sheltered, thank goodness) with a cuppa, watching the storm brew. It forced a cheeky siesta by the stove, feet up, pondering life's little curveballs – like why I always pack too many jumpers but forget the brolly. By day three's early hours, the sun was back, teasing one last ambly loop around the deer park edges – misty meadows, ancient oaks, the works. Weather held just long enough for me to soak it in, but as I packed up, spots of rain dotted the windscreen. Driving off, I glanced back at the lodge glowing in the weak light, already plotting a return. Milton Abbas and its walks had me hooked – mishaps, mood swings and all. Dorset, you cheeky beauty, you've got me sussed. |
