About Devon
Pulling up to Wrinklewood that first afternoon, I was smitten straight away. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Ilfracombe, this cosy lodge looked like it had been plucked from a storybook—wooden beams, flower baskets dripping with lobelia, and a thatched roof that screamed "proper Devon hideaway." It's one of those places run by folks who know exactly what slow holidays are about: no frills, just pure relaxation. I dumped my bags, cracked open the door, and was hit by that heavenly mix of woodsmoke and fresh baking from the welcome basket—scones, clotted cream, and jam that tasted like summer in a jar. First impressions? Blissfully lazy. The garden was the star of the show right from the off. Overgrown in the best possible way, with wildflowers buzzing with bees and a hammock slung between two apple trees. I flopped into it with a cuppa, the kind of tea that's strong enough to stand a spoon in, and just... stayed there. No itinerary, no rush. The sun filtered through the leaves, and all I could hear was the distant crash of waves from the coast—Ilfracombe's beaches are only a short stroll away, but who needs them when paradise is in your back garden? That evening, as the light faded into that soft Devonian pink, I pottered about the lodge. The living room is a hug in furniture form: squashy sofas piled with cushions, a wood burner begging for logs (though it was mild enough to skip it), and shelves groaning under dog-eared paperbacks. I picked up an old P.G. Wodehouse and lost myself in Jeeves' antics, chuckling at the absurdity while sipping local cider from the fridge. Dinner was equally effortless—fired up the barbecue on the patio with some fresh mackerel from Ilfracombe's harbour (a five-minute wander down the hill), slathered in butter and herbs. Eating al fresco as the stars popped out felt like cheating at life. The next morning—my second day, but still very much in "first impressions" mode—reinforced why I'd come here: to do bugger all, brilliantly. Breakfast in the garden with birdsong as my alarm, then a gentle amble to the nearby Tunnels Beaches. Those Victorian tunnels carved into the cliffs are a quirky delight, leading to a sheltered cove where I paddled in rock pools, feeling like a kid again. No hiking marathons, just toes in the sea and a bag of chips from a beach hut. Back at Wrinklewood, I sprawled on the lawn with a book, letting the afternoon drift by. It's funny how, in our rush-rush world, doing nothing feels revolutionary. I caught myself staring at a ladybird on a daisy, pondering how I'd let emails and deadlines steal these simple joys. A gentle nudge from the universe, perhaps, to slow down and breathe. By day three, Wrinklewood had worked its magic. A lazy lunch of ploughman's in the garden—cheddar sharp enough to wake the dead, pickled onions that crunched like applause—followed by more reading and the odd doze. I wandered the lodge's nooks: the sunlit conservatory perfect for whiling away hours, the quirky wooden carvings that made me smile. No big adventures, just the joy of pottering, of letting Devon wrap you in its gentle arms. Leaving felt wrong, but I'll be back. Wrinklewood isn't a holiday; it's a reset button for the soul. |
