About Devon
I’ll never forget the drive to Wrinklewood Premier last autumn – that crisp October weekend when Devon wrapped itself in a golden haze, turning every twisty lane into a postcard. I’d set off from Bristol early, fancying a leisurely jaunt along the A39, but about halfway, as the Exmoor fringes gave way to those rolling North Devon hills, I had a proper daft mishap. My sat-nav, bless it, decided to throw a wobbly right by Combe Martin, directing me down a single-track lane that dead-ended at a muddy farm gate. There I was, reversing like a learner driver, leaves swirling in the rearview as a cheeky robin eyed me from the hedge. Fifteen minutes later, I was back on track, chuckling at my own impatience, with the sea’s briny tang already sneaking through the vents.

Pulling up to Wrinklewood just before lunch, the seasonal magic hit me full force. Autumn in Ilfracombe is pure poetry – not the soggy grey of midwinter, but that fleeting sweet spot where the leaves are bronze and fiery, carpeting the ground like nature’s own bonfire. The cottage sat nestled in a quiet spot a short hop from town, its stone walls glowing warm under weak sunbeams that slanted through scudding clouds. I parked on the gravel drive, crunching over fallen acorns, and hauled my bag inside, the air sharp with woodsmoke from a neighbour’s chimney. First impressions? Cosy as a hug from an old mate. The open-plan living space welcomed me with a wood-burning stove already laid (matches at the ready), plush sofas begging a collapse, and a kitchen kitted out proper – think Aga vibes, local pasty crumbs on the side from the last guests, and a jug of fresh Devon cream from a farm down the road.

Stepping out the back door for that initial recce, the garden stole the show. Overgrown in the best way, with apple trees heavy with windfalls – I snaffled a couple, tart and juicy, perfect for later mulled cider dreams. The season had turned it into a rustling haven: ferns turning copper, blackberries still clinging to brambles (though the birds had nabbed the ripest), and distant waves crashing audible over the hill. No summer crowds here; just solitude, save for the odd dog walker crunching past. I wandered the five-minute stroll to Hele Bay, where the tide pools shimmered under low light, reflecting orange skies. Seals bobbed offshore, their barks carrying on the breeze – a reminder that autumn’s quieter rhythms let you tune into Devon’s wild side without the holiday racket.

Back at Wrinklewood by late afternoon, the light faded fast, as it does in October, painting the lounge in amber glows. I lit the fire (no disasters, hurrah), cracked open a pasty from the Ilfracombe deli, and sank into the armchair with a cuppa. The windows framed it all: mist rolling in from the Channel, hedges alive with rustling, that earthy petrichor scent after a light shower. It was then, staring into the flames, that a bit of gentle reflection crept in. Amid the city grind back home, I’d forgotten how a place like this – unpretentious, elemental – strips you back. Autumn’s mellow decay mirrored my own need to slow down, shed the unnecessary, like those drifting leaves outside. No grand adventures planned yet, just this arrival, this immersion in the season’s embrace.

By evening, with stars pricking the ink-black sky (no light pollution here), I felt utterly settled. Wrinklewood Premier wasn’t just a cottage; it was Devon in autumn distilled – hearty, unshowy, alive with subtle wonders. If you’re pondering a getaway, chase that golden hour yourself. You won’t regret it.
