About Willow.
Dolton is a quaint rural village in Devon's rolling countryside. It has a few shops and pubs—perfect for stocking up on essentials or enjoying a pint and pub grub. Winding lanes, high hedgerows and a slower pace define the area. Nearby, Dartmoor's open tors draw walkers, while Exmoor's hills and surfing beaches are a scenic drive away. Historic Torrington (home to RHS Rosemoor) and Exeter's cathedral, Roman walls, shops and theatres make great day trips. Barnstaple, Copplestone and Okehampton are also worth visiting. About Devon
Pulling up to Willow around lunchtime felt like stumbling into a secret hug from the countryside. This cosy stone cottage, tucked down a lane so narrow I half-expected a tractor showdown, is the epitome of Devon charm – all wonky beams, a cracking Aga in the kitchen, and a garden that spills wild into the fields. First impressions? Pure bliss. I dumped my bags, brewed a cuppa from the welcome pack (proper builder’s tea, none of your fancy leaf stuff), and flopped into the squishy armchair by the window. Outside, sheep grazed lazily, and the only soundtrack was birdsong and the odd distant moo. No traffic hum, no neon glow – just me, Willow, and three days to wander. Keen to shake off the drive, I grabbed my boots for a potter around the immediate lanes, figuring I’d suss out the lay of the land. That’s when the magic kicked in: getting properly lost, in the best possible way. Instead of sticking to the main drag towards Winkleigh village, I veered off down an unmarked bridleway signposted with a faded fingerpost – the sort you’d miss if you blinked. Ten minutes in, and I’d chanced upon a hidden pocket of woodland that doesn’t even ping on Google Maps. Towering oaks draped in moss, bluebells nodding underfoot even out of season, and a babbling brook where I skimmed stones like a kid. Sat on a fallen log for a biscuit break, I couldn’t help but chuckle – here I was, city escapee, grinning like an idiot at a pile of pebbles. Who needs TripAdvisor when a wrong turn delivers this? Emboldened, I looped back via another accidental detour, unearthing a teensy farm shop I swear isn’t listed anywhere. Tucked behind a barn not five minutes from Willow, it was run by a cheery chap called Tom who flogged the creamiest clotted cream I’ve ever tasted, straight from his herd, plus jars of bramble jelly that screamed Devon. We nattered about the weather (as you do), and he tipped me off about a forgotten dew pond up the hill – an ancient watering hole for livestock, rimmed with ferns and utterly silent save for dragonflies zipping about. I clambered up there at golden hour, the sun dipping low over the Torridge valleys, and it hit me: this is why we come to places like Willow. Not the Instagram reels, but these off-the-beaten-track gems you only find by ditching the plan. That first afternoon melted into a gentle mooch back to the cottage, where I cracked open a pasty from Tom’s shop and watched the mist roll in. Sipping cider by the fire (logs stacked ready, bless ’em), I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life back home’s a whirlwind – deadlines, doom-scrolling, the lot. But here, losing myself in Devon’s secret corners reminded me to slow down, breathe deep, and let the path unfold. Willow wasn’t just a stay; it was an invitation to rediscover that simple joy. Can’t wait to get lost there again. |
