About Devon
By the time I trundled into Beer village, the sun was dipping low, casting this golden glow over the Jurassic Coast. Beer's one of those quintessential Devon fishing hamlets—whitewashed cottages tumbling down to a shingle beach, pebble-dashed boats bobbling in the harbour, and the air thick with that salty tang mixed with fish and chips from the local takeaways. The Lookout Tower sits right on the seafront, perched like it's keeping watch over the English Channel. Spotting it was a doddle after my earlier chaos; you can't miss the thing—it's this quirky, circular stone tower, all weathered and romantic, with a nod to its days as a coastguard lookout. I parked up (prayerfully, no more key dramas), grabbed my bags, and punched in the code for the gate. Bloody brilliant—the entrance is through a little courtyard garden bursting with hydrangeas and lavender, still buzzing with bees even at dusk. Stepping inside was like tumbling into a hug from an old mate. The ground floor's this cosy living area with a wood-burning stove (not lit yet, but I could already imagine cosy nights in), squashy sofas in seaside blues, and a telly begging for a Strictly Come Dancing marathon. But the real jaw-dropper? The spiral staircase winding up to the top floor bedroom. I lugged my case up those twisty steps—pausing for a dramatic huff every few treads—and emerged into the most spectacular eyrie. Floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides, offering 180-degree views straight out to sea. I mean, proper panoramic stuff: the pebbly beach below, Hooken Cliffs rising dramatically to the east, and westwards towards Branscombe's rolling valleys. Seagulls wheeled past at eye level, and in the distance, you could just make out the chalky outline of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. I flung open the window, let the breeze whip through, and stood there gobsmacked, cuppa in hand from the well-stocked kitchenette below. Sunset hit like a postcard—fiery oranges bleeding into the waves crashing on the shore. First impressions? Utterly magical, mishap and all. That arrival kerfuffle melted away the second I clocked those views; it's the kind of place that makes you breathe deeper, forget the daily grind. Wandering down to the beach that evening, toes crunching on pebbles, I nipped into The Anchor Inn for a pint of Otter Ale—local as they come—and watched families crabbing off the harbour wall. Back at the tower, I rustled up fish pie from the Co-op down the road (Devon does seafood right), and as night fell, the beam from the distant Start Point Lighthouse swept across the sea like a friendly wink. Lying in that king-sized bed under the eaves, waves lapping audibly below, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life's too short for locked boots and sat-nav sulks; places like this remind you to savour the simple joys—a cracking view, a full belly, and the promise of fossil-hunting tomorrow. If you're after a Devon bolt-hole that feels like your own private lighthouse, The Lookout Tower's the ticket. Can't wait to go back. |
