I finally made it to Sea Shimmer in Salcombe after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M5. We'd piled into the car that Friday morning, me, the wife, and our two lads, aged 10 and 7, buzzing with that pre-holiday excitement that turns kids into human pogo sticks. Devon’s roads are gorgeous, all those twisting lanes flanked by hedgerows and the odd sheep giving you the side-eye, but honestly, they’re not built for impatient drivers like me. About 20 minutes from Salcombe, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow track that dead-ended at a muddy farm gate. Cue the classic dad fail: reversing with a caravan-sized boot full of beach gear while the youngest wails, “Are we lost forever, Daddy?” A quick U-turn, a sheepish Google Maps consultation, and we were back on track. Laughable now, but it set the tone for our relaxed family break – a bit of lodge life chaos amid the simple pleasures.

Pulling up to Sea Shimmer just before lunch, I was gobsmacked. Tucked into the hillside overlooking the estuary, this chic little retreat looks like it’s been plucked from a posh interiors mag, but with that proper Devon welcome. The exterior’s all weathered wood and glass, shimmering (see what I did there?) in the pale spring sun, with views straight down to the sparkling water of Salcombe Harbour. We’d booked it for its pet-friendly vibe – our scruffy labradoodle, Monty, was already sniffing out adventure – and the promise of estuary walks on the doorstep. Unloading the car felt like unwrapping a present; the boys darted about, claiming bedrooms before I’d even turned off the engine.

Stepping inside, the first impression hit like a warm hug. Open-plan living space with massive windows framing the boats bobbing below – it’s the kind of spot that makes you exhale and think, “Yep, this is it.” The kitchen’s kitted out brilliantly: shiny hob, a telly-sized fridge, and enough worktop to rustle up fish and chips without elbowing everyone. We dumped the bags and cracked open the welcome pack – local Salcombe gin, shortbread, and a cheeky note from the owners saying “kick back and enjoy.” The lads discovered the board games stash and were straight into a rowdy game of Jenga, toppling towers louder than the gulls outside.

That first afternoon was pure bliss. We ambled down the gentle path to the estuary – all five minutes’ walk, past wildflowers and the hum of distant yacht engines. The water’s this mesmerising turquoise, lapping at golden sands that scream Devon postcard. Monty chased sticks into the shallows while the boys skimmed stones, their whoops echoing off the cliffs. I joined in, naturally failing spectacularly – my stones plopped like startled ducks, earning giggles all round. Light humour in the air: “Dad, you throw like Gran!” We picnicked on pasties from the local bakery (proper Cornish ones, flaky and steaming), feet dangling over the edge, watching families kayak and paddleboard. No rush, no itinerary – just that simple joy of salt air and squelchy sand between toes.

As the sun dipped, casting that golden glow over Salcombe’s pastel cottages, we wandered back up to Sea Shimmer. Cosied up on the plush sofas, sipping tea, with the wood burner flickering (even in May, Devon evenings have a nip), I had a quiet moment of self-reflection. Life back home’s a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but here, staring out at the twinkling harbour lights, I realised how these little escapes recharge the batteries. It’s not about grand adventures; it’s the chaos of a muddy dog, stone-skipping fails, and first impressions that stick – like this gem of a place, making our three-day Devon jaunt already unforgettable.
