About Devon
I finally made it to Rafters in Georgeham after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from Braunton, where I'd taken a daft wrong turn down a lane so narrow my little hatchback was practically kissing the hedgerows. Picture this: me, swearing under my breath like a proper numpty, while my other half in the passenger seat stifles giggles and the kids in the back chant "Are we there yet?" for the umpteenth time. It was one of those classic Devon moments – you know, the kind where the sat-nav gives up and you're left navigating by cow pats and cream tea signs. But honestly, that fifteen-minute detour was worth it, because as we crested the hill into Georgeham, there it was: Rafters, our cosy little haven, nestled in this postcard-perfect corner of North Devon.

Pulling up outside, I was hit with that instant "ahh" feeling you chase on holiday. The cottage is one of those chocolate-box affairs – all wonky thatched roof, whitewashed walls, and a front garden bursting with foxgloves and lavender that smelled like summer in a bottle. It's right on the edge of the village, so quiet you could hear the bees humming, yet just a hop from the beach. We tumbled out of the car, bags flying everywhere, and the kids immediately claimed the garden as their kingdom, racing about with sticks like feral pirates. I stood there for a sec, key in hand, thinking, "Blimey, we've actually done it – escaped the school run for three whole days."

Unlocking the door was pure magic. Stepping inside, it's like the cottage wraps you in a big, fluffy hug. The living room's the heart of it – low-beamed ceiling that makes you duck if you're over six foot (note to self: stoop more gracefully next time), a wood-burner begging for a fire even in July, and mismatched armchairs that scream "plonk yourself down and forget the world." The kitchen's a dream for lazy family cooking – Aga humming away, stocked with everything from cafetière to quirky mugs with Devon slogans like "Proper Job." We raided the welcome hamper straight off: local fudge, scones (clotted cream already in the fridge, thank the lord), and a bottle of Exmoor cider that went down a treat while we unpacked.

First impressions? Chaos, in the best possible way. The littlest one discovered the bunk beds upstairs and turned into a human catapult, bouncing like a possessed kangaroo until we had to intervene with promises of beach treasures. The master bedroom's a riot of floral quilts and sea views through the window – I cracked it open and inhaled that salty North Devon air, mingled with wildflowers from the nearby dunes. It's all so unpretentious; no glossy hotel vibes here, just proper lodge life, where the floorboards creak underfoot and the hot water runs endless for those post-sand showers.

We didn't waste a moment. A quick five-minute wander down to Georgeham's sandy paths led us to the beach – Croyde Bay's gentle waves calling like an old mate. The kids paddled in rock pools, hunting for crabs, while we parents flopped on the pebbles with fish and chips from the beach kiosk, the kind that's greasy enough to count as a food group. Back at Rafters by late afternoon, we lit the barbecue in the sheltered patio – sausages sizzling, laughter echoing off the flint walls. That first evening, as the sun dipped behind the dunes painting everything golden, I had one of those quiet reflective moments. Sat there with a cuppa, watching the family sprawl about, I realised it's these simple bits – the mismatched plates, the sand-tracked floors, the shared giggles over a spilled cider – that recharge the soul. No grand plans, just us, this brilliant little cottage, and Devon's effortless charm. Rafters isn't just a stay; it's the kind of place that makes you promise to come back before you've even left.
