About Devon
Spotting the sign for Roadford Lakes Lodges was like a sigh of relief. Poppy sat there nestled among the lodges, a proper cosy haven right on the edge of the 280-acre Roadford Lake – all timber-clad charm with a veranda begging for a GandT at sunset. I parked up, still mopping coffee off my jeans, and lugged my bags to the door, key fob in hand from the Snaptrip lot. The first impression? Pure magic. Stepping inside, it was like the universe had handed me a hug. The open-plan living space opened right up, with a wood-burning stove already set (thank god, given the nip in the autumn air), plush sofas in that Scandi-style grey, and a kitchen that screamed "whip up a fry-up without faffing about." I dumped my stuff and flung open the patio doors – bam, lake views stretching out like a postcard, with ducks paddling about and the water glinting under a patchy Devon sky. First order of business: explore the deck. It's massive, overlooking the lake, with those comfy loungers perfect for doing bugger all. I plonked myself down, still chuckling at my arrival farce – honestly, who'd have thought a posh coffee would turn me into a human spill mat? The air was crisp, laced with that earthy pond scent, and in the distance, I could hear the faint lap of water against the shore. No traffic hum, no neighbourly chit-chat, just birdsong and the odd ripple from a windsurfer on the lake. Roadford Lake's got that rep for watersports, but I wasn't arsed about that today; it was all about soaking in the peace after my mad dash. Wandering the immediate grounds felt like stepping into a nature doc. Paths wind right from the lodge down to the water's edge, fringed with ferns and those gnarly Devon oaks. I spotted a heron stabbing at fish – proper majestic – and couldn't resist dipping a toe in the shallows. Chilly as a witch's tit, but invigorating. Back at Poppy, I cracked open a cheeky local ale from the fridge (stocked with Tarka Trail treats, naturally), and that's when the self-reflection hit. Sat there, feet up, watching the sun dip low over the lake, I realised how knackered I'd been from city life. This place stripped it all away in minutes – no signals bossing me about, just me, the water, and a dawning sense that sometimes the best holidays start with a spill and end with stillness. The hot tub bubbled invitingly on the deck too, promising bubbles and stars later, but for now, arrival chaos had morphed into utter bliss. As the light faded, casting that golden Devon glow across the lake, I fired up the stove, rustled up pasta with bits from the nearby Torridge farm shop I'd nipped to en route (mental note: their pasties are lethal), and just breathed it all in. Poppy wasn't just a lodge; it was an instant reset button. First impressions? Ten out of ten, mishap and all. Can't wait for day two. |
