About Devon
I finally made it to Ocean Tide Villa 3 Hot Tub in Woolacombe after what felt like the scenic route from hell—well, not hell exactly, just a cheeky little detour courtesy of my rubbish sense of direction. We'd piled into the car that Friday morning from up north, the kids buzzing with excitement about beaches and pasties, me promising Mum we'd be there by teatime. But no, I missed the turning for the A361, ended up looping through Braunton Burrows like a lost sheep, and to top it off, we had a minor puncture scare on a narrow lane near Mortehoe. Nothing dramatic—just a rogue flint from Devon's rugged roads that had the tyre pressure light flashing like a strobe. We pulled over by a drystone wall, faffed about with the pump for 20 minutes while the littlest one whinged about needing a wee, and laughed it off with a bag of seaside rock from a nearby honesty box. Classic family holiday chaos, innit? By the time we trundled down that final twisty track to the villa, the sun was dipping low over the Atlantic, painting everything golden.

Pulling up to Ocean Tide Villa 3, I was gobsmacked. Tucked into a peaceful spot just a stone's throw from Woolacombe's sandy expanse, it looked like the perfect Devon hideaway—stone-built charm with a thatched vibe, flower baskets spilling over, and that promised hot tub gleaming on the private terrace like a bubbly beacon. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, kids racing ahead while I wrestled the key safe code on my phone. Inside, it was pure cosy cottage bliss: low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burner begging for a log or two, and a kitchen that screamed "whip up a Full English tomorrow". The living room opened straight onto sea views—bar a few gorse bushes—and you could hear the distant crash of waves on the rocks below. First impressions? Spot on for a relaxed family break. No frills, just proper lodge life.

We dumped our stuff and cracked open the welcome pack—local cider, shortbread, and a cheeky note from the owners about nearby walks. The kids claimed the bunk room upstairs, all giggles and wrestling over the top bunk, while we bagged the master with its en-suite and that unbeatable outlook. I stepped out onto the terrace as dusk fell, hot tub already steaming invitingly (they'd left it primed, bless 'em), and plonked myself down with a cuppa. The air was that crisp, briny Devon tang, laced with wildflowers from the North Devon Coast path just beyond the gate. From there, it's a five-minute wander to Woolacombe Beach—those three miles of golden sand where seals sometimes bob about offshore. But we weren't rushing; this was about unwinding.

That first evening set the tone perfectly. We rustled up fish and chips from the village (proper cod, not that haddock nonsense), ate them on the terrace as the sun set, paper wrappings flapping in the breeze. The littluns splashed in the hot tub—screams of delight when bubbles hit their toes—while I sipped wine and watched the horizon fade to pink. There was a moment of gentle chaos when the eldest tipped a bucket of seawater over the edge, soaking my trainers, but we just howled with laughter. Sat there later, stars popping out over the dark sea, I had a quiet think: life's mad rush back home feels miles away here. Amid the simple pleasures—a decent brew, waves whispering, family squabbles turning to hugs—it's these unhurried spots that recharge the batteries. Ocean Tide Villa nailed it from the off; if the rest of our three days matched those first impressions, we'd be sorted.
