About Devon
I finally made it to Ocean Breeze Villa 3 Hot Tub in Woolacombe after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol. Picture this: I'm trundling along the A39, windows down, singing along to some dodgy 90s tunes, when I decide to stop at a services for a pasty. Big mistake. I back into a bollard – nothing major, just a sad little crunch that left my bumper looking like it'd lost a fight with a grumpy sheep. Laughed it off, gave the car a reassuring pat, and carried on, arriving at the villa just as the sun dipped low over the North Devon coast.

Pulling up to Ocean Breeze Villa 3, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those classic seaside cottages, perched in a quiet spot near Mortehoe, with the sea breeze already whipping through my hair. The hot tub was gleaming out back, promising steamy bliss after a long day, and the whole place had that cosy, lived-in vibe – whitewashed walls, a cheeky Union Jack flag fluttering by the door. But honestly, it was the locals who turned my first impressions into pure gold. Devon folk have this knack for quirky charm that hits you right in the funny bone.

First off, there was Madge, the landlady who handed over the keys. She's a proper Woolacombe character – think wiry hair like a bird's nest, wellies caked in sand, and a laugh that could wake a hibernating badger. "Mind the hot tub, love," she cackled, eyeing my bumper dent with a wink. "Last guest filled it with cider by accident. Turned into a proper party!" We chatted for ages about her glory days surfing Woolacombe Beach back in the '70s. "Waves were monsters then," she said, mimicking a wipeout with wild arm flails. "You modern lot with your inflatables – soft as clotted cream!" I was in stitches, already feeling like I'd stumbled into a sitcom.

As I unpacked, I wandered down to the beach path – it's only a short stroll from the villa – and bumped into Barry, the ice cream man with a van that looked older than my nan. He's got this magnificent walrus moustache and sells the creamiest 99s you've ever tasted. "First time in Mortehoe?" he asked, scooping vanilla like a pro. Turned out he's lived here 40 years, dodging seals on his daily rounds. "Saw a basking shark last week, big as this van!" he boasted, eyes twinkling. We got onto the topic of the hot tub – he'd heard about Madge's cider fiasco from the village WhatsApp. "Fancy a dip at dusk? Seals put on a show," he advised. Proper gent, Barry, with stories that made the waves crashing behind us feel like background music to his tales.

Later, firing up the hot tub for a test run, who should pop by but old Reg from the neighbouring cottage. He's the fisherman type – weather-beaten face, pipe in hand (unlit, mind), and a dog called Salty who thinks every stranger's lap is his throne. Reg leaned on the fence, peering over like a nosy parrot. "That there's the best spot for stargazing," he grunted, pointing at the darkening sky. "But watch for the glow worms down by the dunes – cheeky little blighters, nicking your socks if you're not careful." We yarned about everything from the best pasty spots (his vote: the bakery in Mortehoe village, two minutes' walk away) to the time a cow wandered into his garden during a storm. "Mooed all night, the bugger!" His deadpan delivery had me howling, bubbles fizzing around us as Salty snored on my towel.

Sinking into that steaming hot tub as the sun set over the Atlantic, pint of local Otter Ale in hand (nabbed from the offy Reg recommended), I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life back home's a rush – deadlines, traffic, the lot. Here, in this unassuming villa with its parade of eccentrics, everything slowed right down. Madge's surf yarns, Barry's shark sightings, Reg's glow worm warnings – they weren't just chit-chat; they were Devon's soul, wrapping around you like a warm towel. First impressions? Blown away. If quirky locals are the heartbeat of a holiday, Ocean Breeze Villa 3 has got it pumping. Can't wait for day two.
