About Devon
I finally made it to No.1 The Vista in Woolacombe after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol. Picture this: I'm humming along the A39, windows down, classic FM on low, dreaming of pasties and pastimes, when—splat!—a rogue seagull decides my windscreen needs a fresh coat of guano. Proper Jackson Pollock job, it was. I pulled over at the next services near Braunton, cursing under my breath while scrubbing it off with a soggy napkin and half a bottle of screen wash. "Welcome to Devon," I muttered, chuckling at my own daft luck. Twenty minutes later, I was trundling into Mortehoe, the North Devon air already thick with that salty tang of the Atlantic, and there she was—No.1 The Vista, perched like a cheeky postcard on the hillside overlooking Willingcott Valley.

Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon, I felt an instant grin creeping across my face. It's one of those proper cosy numbers, all dog-friendly charm with a hot tub bubbling away like it was waiting just for me, and those unbeatable views straight out to Woolacombe Beach. I dumped my bags in the lounge—plump sofas, wood burner primed with logs (though it was a balmy August day, mind)—and cracked open the bifold doors to the decking. Blimey, the garden! A lush, private patch sloping down towards the valley, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and in the distance, the sea shimmering like a promise of doing sod all for three whole days. That's the joy of it, isn't it? No itinerary, no alarms, just me, a pot of tea, and the sheer bliss of buggering about with precisely nothing.

First impressions? Pure escapism. I flopped into a lounger with a dog-eared copy of my latest library thriller—some Poldark-esque romp that felt spot on for Devon—and let the hours melt away. The sun dipped lazy-like over the dunes, painting the sky in those ridiculous pinks and oranges you only get by the coast. A cheeky squirrel scampered across the garden fence, eyeing me up as if to say, "Mate, you've got the right idea—zero hustle." I nipped inside for a brew, marvelling at the kitchen: all sleek granite worktops stocked with local Ilfracombe tea bags and a welcome hamper of Devon fudge that had me grinning like a kid. No cooking faff for me; supper was a simple ploughman's from the fridge—proper cheddar, crusty bread, and a cheeky cider from the nearby shop.

That evening, as the light faded, I wandered down the garden path, bare feet on the cool grass, breathing in the honeysuckle and sea spray. It's funny how arriving somewhere like this hits you with a gentle thump of reflection. Back home, life's a non-stop whirl—emails pinging, deadlines looming, the usual treadmill. Here? Time stretches out like warm toffee. I sat on the deck, hot tub jets massaging my shoulders (after a quick dip, naturally), watching rabbits hop about in the twilight. No plans for tomorrow beyond maybe ambling the five-minute stroll to Woolacombe Sands for a paddle and an ice cream from the van. Why rush? The Vista's got it all: that wraparound deck for sunset gins, the cosy nooks for rainy-day dozes (fingers crossed for sun), and views that make you forget the world exists beyond the valley.

By bedtime, tucked under crisp cotton sheets with the sea murmuring faintly through the open window, I was smitten. No.1 The Vista isn't about grand adventures—it's the antidote to them. Three days of lingering over brekkies, lazy garden lounging, and the odd potter to the beach for shells and solitude. My insignificant seagull mishap? Best thing that happened; it slowed me right down from the off. Devon does that to you—whispers "stay put, love, and savour it." And savour it I shall.
