About Devon
By the time I trundle into Lustra, the sun's dipping low over the estuary, painting everything gold. Nautica sits there like a hug from an old mate – a classic whitewashed cottage tucked into the hillside, just a stone's throw from Salcombe's glittering waters. I park up (praying the tyre holds), lug my bags up the flower-lined path, and fumble the keycode with sticky fingers. Door swings open, and blimey, it's even better than the pics. The living room hits you first: low-beamed ceiling, a wood-burner begging for a lazy evening, and those big sash windows framing the creek like a living postcard. I dump my stuff on the squishy sofa and flop down, the chaos of the drive melting away. First impression? Pure bliss. It's got that lived-in charm – not sterile holiday let vibes, but proper homey, with quirky Devon touches like a shelf of dog-eared Poldark novels and a kettle that whistles like it's auditioning for the WI. I potter about, clocking the kitchen next. Spotless granite worktops, a fridge stocked with local milk (hurrah for no Tesco run), and a view straight out to the boats bobbing on the water. Hunger kicks in – that puncture palaver burned calories – so I unpack my pasty from Salcombe's bakery (picked up en route, still warm). Sat at the oak table, munching flaky pastry and sipping builder's tea, I gaze at the estuary. Seals? Probably frolicking out there. The light's fading, turning the hills opposite all misty purple. It's one of those moments where you think, "This is it, innit? Why do I ever leave?" Evening draws in, and I can't resist a mooch outside. Nautica's garden is a riot of hydrangeas – those massive blue mopheads Devon does so well – with a patio overlooking the water. I fire up the BBQ (gas, thank god, no faffing with charcoal after today's antics), grill some fresh mackerel from the local fish shed, and crack a cold cider. Stars pop out early here, no light pollution, just the lap of waves and a heron skimming the creek. Chuckling to myself about the tyre farce – classic me, turning a 90-minute drive into a two-hour comedy – I feel a proper pang of reflection. Life's mad rush back home? Forgotten. Here, in this unpretentious nook, I'm just a bloke with a full belly and a view that whispers "stay a bit longer." First morning dawns crisp, mist rolling off the water like fairy dust. I brew coffee in the sunlit kitchen, step onto the terrace, and breathe it all in. Nautica's nailed it – close enough to Salcombe's buzz for a cheeky beach wander to North Sands (ten minutes' stroll), yet tucked away for total peace. That arrival kerfuffle? Best plot twist ever. It's made me appreciate this spot even more – a proper Devon gem that wraps you up and doesn't let go. If you're after first impressions that stick, this is your bolthole. Can't wait for day two. |
