About Devon
Pulling up to Meavy Cottage just before lunch, I felt that proper holiday buzz kick in. Tucked away in a quiet spot overlooking the Dart Estuary—think shimmering water, bobbing boats, and the faint cry of gulls—it's the sort of place that screams "relax, you've earned this." The cottage itself is a proper gem: stone-built with a thatched roof that looks like it's been there since smugglers roamed these parts. We parked on the gravel drive (crunching tyres like a satisfying ASMR video), unloaded the boot in a flurry of wellies and beach towels, and stepped inside. First impressions? Cosy chaos heaven. The living room's got this massive inglenook fireplace—empty for now, but begging for a log burner crackle—and squishy sofas that swallowed us whole as we flopped down, kicking off shoes caked in Dartmoor mud. The lads were off like rockets, claiming the bunk beds upstairs in what the owners call the "snug" room. "This is better than Fortnite!" the eldest declared, diving into the top bunk while the little one tested the ladder with theatrical wobbles. I couldn't help but chuckle—nothing says family break like that immediate lodge-life pandemonium. Downstairs, the kitchen's a dream for lazy cooks like me: Aga cooker humming away (I prodded it nervously, half-expecting it to bite), a farmhouse table groaning under our picnic haul of cheddar, scones, and clotted cream pinched from a farm shop en route. We cracked open a bottle of local cider—sharp, fizzy, pure Devon—and toasted to three days of zero alarms. Stepping out the back door onto the patio was the real jaw-dropper. That estuary view! yachts slicing through the water, the sun glinting off mudflats where herons stalked about like feathered detectives. We wandered the little garden, picking at blackberries from the hedge (slightly underripe, but who cares?), and spotted a family of seals basking on a sandbank not 200 yards out. "Can we swim to them?" the boys begged. "Not unless you fancy a crab for tea," I quipped, herding them back for jam sandwiches. It's these simple pleasures that hit different—the lack of Wi-Fi signal forcing us to actually chat, the breeze carrying salt and woodsmoke, the way the cottage wraps around you like a favourite jumper. As the afternoon sun dipped, we ambled down to the nearby slipway—five minutes' walk, if that—dipping toes in the cool estuary water and skimmed stones till our arms ached. Back at the cottage, chaos reigned supreme: one lad's attempt at "helping" with dinner ended in flour-dusted floors and a wonky pasty that tasted like victory anyway. Sitting there later, feet up, watching the lads conk out mid-board game, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life's mad rush back home? Forgotten. Here, in this unpretentious slice of Devon paradise, it's all about these unhurried first hours—the mishaps, the mess, the magic of just being. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but honestly, this arrival alone was worth the trip. |
