About Devon
I finally made it to Meadow Lodge after what felt like the scenic route from hell, though in Devon, that's practically a rite of passage. I'd set off from Exeter early that Friday morning, buzzing with excitement for my three-day escape to this cosy corner of West Devon. The sat-nav promised a breezy hour-and-a-bit to Lifton, but oh no, not on my watch. About halfway there, somewhere near Okehampton, I decided to "improve" on its directions by following a faded sign for a cream tea detour. Big mistake. Twenty minutes later, I'm bumping down a single-track lane that narrowed into a hedge-lined nightmare, with my little hatchback scraping the verges and my heart in my mouth. "This is fine," I muttered to myself, channelling that meme dog in a burning room, as a tractor loomed round the bend. I reversed like a pro (read: panicked amateur), giggling hysterically when the farmer waved me through with a cheery thumbs-up. Lesson learned: Devon's roads are for locals and the terminally optimistic.

By the time I pulled into the gravel drive at Meadow Lodge, I was a good half-hour late, windswept, and craving a cuppa. But blimey, what a sight. Nestled in a quiet spot just outside Lifton, this chocolate-box cottage popped up like something from a postcard – all honeyed stone walls, a thatched roof (or at least it looked thatched in my sun-dazzled eyes), and those classic leaded windows glowing in the late afternoon light. The garden was a riot of wildflowers and lavender, buzzing with bees, and I could already smell the earthy Devon air, thick with promise. I tumbled out of the car, arms full of bags, and fumbled the key code on the first go – classic me, turning arrival into a farce. But when the door swung open? Pure magic.

Stepping inside was like being hugged by a warm blanket. The living room screamed "proper Devon hideaway" – low-beamed ceiling, a squishy sofa piled with cushions in muted greens and blues, and a wood-burning stove begging to be lit later. I dumped my stuff and beelined for the kitchen, which was compact but kitted out like a telly chef's dream: Aga humming away, fresh herbs on the windowsill overlooking rolling fields, and a welcome basket with local cider, scones, and clotted cream. I slathered one immediately, crumbs everywhere, laughing at my own greed. "This is living," I thought, licking my fingers.

Upstairs, the bedrooms were cracking – mine had a super-king bed draped in crisp white linens, with views straight out to the meadow (hence the name, I suppose). The en-suite was spotless, with fluffy towels and those little eco-friendly soaps that smell like holidays. I flopped onto the bed for a nano-nap, staring at the ceiling beams and feeling that gentle pang of self-reflection. Here I was, 40-something city escapee, finally switching off from the daily grind. Why had I waited so long? That morning's mishap felt miles away already; it was just the universe's way of making the arrival sweeter.

As dusk fell, I wandered the garden path, pint of that cider in hand, listening to the birds wind down and spotting a fox slinking through the hedge. No TV blaring, no emails pinging – just the soft hum of countryside peace. First impressions? Meadow Lodge had me hooked from the off. Chaotic journey or not, this was the perfect Devon bolthole, and I hadn't even ventured beyond the gate yet. If you're after that "ahh" moment, book it – just stick to the sat-nav.
