About Devon
I finally made it to Maple, that snug little lodge tucked away in the Devon countryside near Winkleigh, after a journey that started with the classic British road trip faff. I'd set off from Bristol in high spirits, playlist blaring, only to realise five miles in that I'd forgotten my reading glasses – the ones I need for my holiday novels. Cue a frantic U-turn at the next services, where I fumbled through my glovebox like a detective on a cold case, muttering about how I'm clearly not cut out for spontaneous getaways. Still, by early afternoon, I was trundling down those narrow Devon lanes, hedges brushing the car like cheeky welcomes, and pulling up to Maple's gravel drive with a sigh of relief.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at instant. The lodge sat there all cosy in its own pocket of garden, surrounded by rolling fields that stretched out like a green quilt under the big Devon sky. No grand manor house, just this perfect wooden haven – think low beams, a wood burner begging to be lit, and windows that framed the world like a painting. I stepped inside, dropped my bags, and was hit by that warm, enveloping smell of fresh linen and polished oak. It screamed 'slow down, mate', which was exactly what I needed after months of city hustle.

Unpacking took all of ten minutes because, let's face it, who packs heavy for a do-nothing holiday? I cracked open a tin of ginger beer from the local shop en route (Devon does them proper, none of that fizzy American nonsense), and flopped onto the squishy sofa with my book – a battered copy of The Wind in the Willows, because why not embrace the countryside vibe? The garden called next, a wildish patch of lawn with bird feeders swaying gently and a couple of weathered benches. I spent the first afternoon there, feet up, watching sparrows squabble over seeds. It's daft how satisfying that is – no agenda, no notifications pinging, just the rustle of leaves and the odd bee buzzing past like it's got all day too.

Evening rolled in soft and golden, the kind of light that makes you forget time exists. I pottered about the kitchen, rustling up a simple supper of local cheddar on crusty bread (nabbed from Winkleigh's village shop – proper stuff, crumbly and sharp), and lit that wood burner. Crackle, glow, sorted. Sat there with a cuppa, staring into the flames, I had one of those gentle moments of self-reflection: life's been a mad dash lately, hasn't it? Chasing deadlines, scrolling endlessly. Here at Maple, doing bugger all felt revolutionary. No guilt, just pure, unadulterated loafing.

Next morning – day two already? – I embraced the joy of lingering. Breakfast was leisurely porridge on the patio, steam rising as mist burned off the fields. A gentle wander down the lane revealed a nearby footpath, nothing strenuous, just enough to stretch the legs and breathe in that earthy Devon air, thick with wildflowers and the faint tang of manure from a distant farm. Back at the lodge, it was more reading under the apple tree, dozing off occasionally with a daft grin. Lunch? A ploughman's in the garden, washed down with cider from the fridge (stocked on arrival, bless the hosts). Afternoon blurred into napping, birdwatching, and pondering clouds – shaped like badgers, naturally, given the Mole vibes.

By day three, I'd perfected the art of nowt. A slow amble to the village for papers and pasties, then back to Maple's embrace. Sat in the garden swing, book forgotten, I just... was. The lodge wrapped around me like a hug, its quiet corners perfect for this unhurried reset. Leaving felt wrong, but as I drove off, windows down, I knew I'd be back for more of that sweet, sod-all magic. Devon, Maple, you've got me hooked on proper holidays – the ones where the highlight is breathing easy.
