About Devon
I finally made it to Little Silver Owl after what felt like the scenic route from hell—well, not hell, just a cheeky wrong turn down a lane so narrow I thought we'd end up in someone's hedge. Picture this: me, the wife, and our two lads, ages 8 and 10, crammed into the car with enough crisps and pasties to feed a rugby team. We'd left Exeter early, aiming for that classic Devon drive through rolling hills and chocolate-box villages, but my sat-nav decided to play silly buggers near Chittlehampton. One missed junction, and suddenly we're navigating a single-track road flanked by buzzards eyeing us like lunch. "Dad, are we lost?" pipes up little Jack from the back. "No, mate, just adventuring," I lied, reversing gingerly past a bemused farmer on his tractor. Classic me—always the optimist, rubbish at maps.

By the time we trundled into the sleepy hamlet of High Bickington, the sun was dipping low, casting that golden Devon glow over everything. Little Silver Owl sits tucked away down a quiet lane, just a stone's throw from the village pub—perfect for us lot craving a proper family unwind. It's one of those exquisite little cottages you dream of: stone-built charm with a thatched roof that screams "proper countryside," nestled in its own garden haven. We parked up on the gravel drive, the tyres crunching like we'd arrived at Narnia, and piled out, stretching legs numb from two hours of "are we there yet?" The air hit us first—crisp, laced with wildflowers and that earthy tang of fresh manure from nearby fields. Bliss.

Unlocking the door felt like stepping into a hug. The place is cosy as anything: low-beamed ceilings in the lounge, a wood-burner begging for logs (we chucked some on later for that crackle factor), and a kitchen that's small but mighty stocked—fridge humming with milk, butter, and local eggs left as a welcome. "Mum, look, fairy lights!" squealed Ellie from the back, spotting the twinkly strings over the dining nook. Upstairs, three bedrooms with those fluffy quilts and views out to the garden, where apple trees heavy with fruit swayed gently. Our room overlooked the wild bit at the back—pure poetry, if poetry involves rabbits hopping about at dusk.

First impressions? Pure magic laced with lodge-life chaos, the best kind. We dumped the bags and raided the welcome hamper: scones, clotted cream, and a bottle of scrumpy that had me grinning like a fool. No five-star fuss here—just simple pleasures. The boys were straight out to the garden, kicking a football into the flowerbeds (sorry, owners), while we cracked open drinks on the patio bench. That first evening, as the sun set behind the hedgerows, we grilled sausages on the little barbecue—smoke billowing everywhere, plates balanced on knees. Chaos erupted when Max tripped over the hose, sending water everywhere and soaking his trainers. "It's a water park now!" he yelled, laughing. We joined in, splashing about like idiots until we were drenched and starving.

Sitting there later, towelling off by the fire, I had one of those gentle moments—y'know, the kind where you pause amid the madness and think, "This is it." Work stress from London? Vanished. Kids' squabbles? Background noise to this peace. Devon does that to you—strips it back to family, fresh air, and not giving a toss about muddy wellies. Little Silver Owl nailed it: intimate, unpretentious, the ideal spot for recharging batteries on a three-day jaunt. Can't wait to go back and mess it up all over again.
