About Devon
I finally made it to Little Silver Leaf after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol. I'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting some classic Fleetwood Mac, but about 20 minutes from Chittlehampton, I managed to take a wrong turn onto one of those narrow Devon lanes that twist like a drunkard's scribble. Cue 15 minutes of reversing past a bemused herd of cows while my sat-nav lady cheerfully announced, "You have reached your destination" from a muddy layby. Classic me – always turning a simple journey into a minor adventure. Still, by early afternoon, I was trundling up the quiet lane to High Bickington, and there she was: this cosy little detached lodge, tucked away in its own private garden, looking every bit the perfect hideaway.

Pulling up, I was hit with that instant "ahh" feeling. The place is proper quaint – stone-built with a thatched roof that screams Devon charm, but inside, it's all warm welcomes without the frills. I dumped my bags in the open-plan living area, where a wood-burning stove sat waiting like an old mate ready for a natter, and the kitchen was kitted out just enough for lazy brekkies: a proper Aga vibe without the hassle. No telly blaring, no Wi-Fi nagging at me – just peace. I cracked open the French doors to the garden, and blimey, what a spot. Fully enclosed and private, with a lawn rolling gently down to hedges buzzing with bees, and those sweeping Devonian views across fields to the distant hills. I plonked myself in one of the reclining chairs straight away, cuppa in hand, and thought, "This is it. Three days of bugger all, and I'm here for it."

First impressions? Pure bliss for doing sweet FA. That first afternoon, I didn't venture far – just a slow wander around the garden paths, sniffing the wildflowers and watching a cheeky robin boss the bird feeders. It's got this Wendy house for kids, but solo me turned it into my "den of indolence" for stashing books and crisps. Sat there reading my battered copy of The Secret Garden (fitting, eh?), feet up, as the sun dipped low. No rush, no plans – just the joy of letting time amble by. Dinner was a no-cook affair: cheese platter from the local shop in Umberleigh, a bottle of Devon cider, and me perched on the patio as dusk settled. The air was that perfect rural hush, broken only by the odd sheep bleat or owl hoot later on. I chuckled to myself remembering past holidays where I'd cram in hikes and pubs till I was knackered – here, the highlight was a snail racing across the grass. Light humour in the everyday, innit?

Day two dawned misty, classic Devon, and I embraced the sloth. Brekkie in my dressing gown – toast from the breadmaker (what a treat), then back to the garden with a thermos of tea. I pottered about the raised beds, pinching a few herbs for no reason other than it felt nice, then flopped in the hammock with a podcast on low. The lodge's magic is how it nudges you to slow down; those big windows frame the world outside like a living painting, pulling you into a rhythm of birdsong and breeze. Mid-morning, I fancied a gentle explore – nothing strenuous. A 10-minute drive to Chittlehampton's village green, where I grabbed a paper and pasty from the post office, nodding hellos to locals who probably think us visitors are all the same. Back home, I lit the stove (even though it wasn't cold – just because), curled up on the comfy sofa with my book, and let the afternoon melt away. No guilt, just contentment.

By evening, as I sipped wine by the stove's glow, a bit of gentle reflection crept in. Life back home's a whirlwind – deadlines, notifications, the lot. Here at Little Silver Leaf, arriving and settling in showed me how much I needed this. The joy of very little: a garden that soothes, a lodge that hugs you, and days stretched lazy like warm toffee. It's not about grand escapes; it's the quiet art of pausing. If you're after that, pack light and come. I left feeling lighter than when I arrived, mishap and all.
