About Devon
By the time I spotted the sign for Roadford Lake Lodges, I was soaked, grumpy, and questioning why I hadn't just booked a Travelodge. But then, there it was: Lavender Lodge, tucked amid the rolling fields and whispering woods, right on the edge of the lake. The chaos melted away the second I parked up. This wasn't some soulless caravan park; it was a proper little haven, all lavender-hued wood cladding and pitched roofs that screamed 'welcome home'. I grabbed my dripping bags and dashed to the door, key code in hand from the Snaptrip booking. Inside? Blimey, it was like stepping into a hug. Low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove already set with kindling (cheers for that touch), and a kitchen that looked ready to whip up a full English without breaking a sweat. The sofa? Plump as a Devonshire cream tea, begging me to collapse. First impressions hit like a warm pasty after a hike. I dumped my stuff and beelined for the French doors overlooking Roadford Lake – that massive reservoir sparkling under patchy blue skies, with herons pottering about and distant hills rolling off like a postcard. The deck was genius: private hot tub bubbling away, BBQ spot primed for sausages later, and those unbeatable views. I cracked open a beer from the fridge (fully stocked with local ales, naturally) and just sat there, rain pattering on the roof, watching a buzzard circle overhead. The mishap on the road? Forgotten. This place had that magic – the sort that makes you realise how knackered you've been. Wandering round, I clocked the thoughtful bits: fluffy towels in the bathroom, board games stacked by the telly for rainy nights, and eco-friendly touches like recycling bins and solar-powered lights. The bedroom was a dream – king-sized bed with crisp white sheets, and a window framing the lake so you wake up to water views. No signal on my phone? Result. Proper disconnection. I even spotted a bird feeder outside, already twitchy with finches. Laughing to myself, I thought of that hubcap fiasco – if that's the worst of it, life's sorted. As the sun dipped low, painting the lake gold, I fired up the hot tub. Sinking in with a sigh, bubbles massaging away the drive's drama, I had one of those gentle 'aha' moments. Work's been mental lately, emails piling up like unwashed laundry, and I've been ploughing on autopilot. Here, staring at the ripples and listening to the woods hush, it hit me: sometimes you need a pothole detour to appreciate the view. Lavender Lodge wasn't just a lodge; it was a reset button. First impressions? Bloody perfect. Can't wait to explore the lakeside walks tomorrow, but right now, this is paradise. |
