About Devon
I’ll never forget the drive to Larkstone Elegance in Ilfracombe last autumn – a proper crisp October jaunt through Devon’s winding lanes, leaves crunching under the tyres like nature’s own applause. It was midweek, mid-term holidays for the schools, but the season had well and truly turned; gone were the summer crowds, replaced by that golden hush where the air smells of damp earth and woodsmoke. I’d set off from Bristol early, fancying a scenic route along the A39, but about ten miles shy of Ilfracombe, disaster struck in the form of a rogue pheasant. The blighter darted right across the road, forcing me into an undignified swerve that sent my thermos of tea flying into the footwell. Soggy trousers and a mild panic later, I was back on track, chuckling at my city-slicker reflexes – clearly not honed for Devon’s feathered locals.

Pulling up to Larkstone Elegance just before noon felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked in a quiet spot overlooking the harbour, this stone cottage screamed timeless Devon charm, its slate roof glistening under a weak October sun that was more polite glow than scorching blaze. Autumn’s mellow light bathed everything in amber, turning the sea from summer’s sparkling blue to a moody slate-grey churn – perfect for that bracing North Devon vibe. I parked on the narrow lane outside, the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot setting the tone; no frantic unloading in peak-season heat, just a leisurely lug of my weekend bag while breathing in the salty tang laced with conker-like freshness.

Stepping through the front door was pure magic, the kind that makes you exhale all the week’s nonsense. The owners had left a welcome basket bursting with local treats – Ilfracombe scones (proper clotted cream ones, mind), a bottle of Devon cider, and crab-apple jelly that screamed harvest time. The living room, with its inglenook fireplace already laid with kindling, was begging for a fire; I struck a match within minutes, flames dancing against the chill that autumn sneaks in by teatime. Outside the bay window, the view stretched to the harbour where fishing boats bobbed lazily, their nets empty from the off-season lull – no summer charter racket, just the gentle slap of waves and the occasional gull’s cry. It was blissfully quiet, the kind of peace you only get when the tourists thin out and Devon reclaims its wild soul.

Wandering the cottage, I couldn’t help grinning at the cosy nooks shaped by the season. The kitchen’s Aga hummed warmly, ideal for rustling up a stew with veg from the nearby Chambercombe Manor farm shop – pumpkins and squashes piled high in autumn abundance. Upstairs, the bedrooms had that just-right chill, blankets piled thick against the night’s nip, with windows framing the russet hedgerows rolling down to the coast. First impressions? Spot on for an autumn escape. No battling for beach space at Hele Bay, just a short stroll away where rock pools mirrored the overcast sky, and I poked about for sea glass without a soul in sight. Light humour in the air, too – I slipped on a wet leaf en route back, landing bum-first in a puddle, which had me laughing like a drain. Proper daft, me.

As the afternoon faded into that early October twilight, pint of cider in hand by the fire, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life back home’s a whirlwind of deadlines and grey commutes, but here, with the wind whispering through the eaves and the sea murmuring its ancient rhythm, I realised how autumn strips things bare – no distractions, just you and the raw beauty of Devon. Larkstone Elegance wasn’t just a stay; it was a seasonal reset, reminding me to savour the slow burn before winter’s grip. If you’re pondering a three-day bolt-hole, book it for autumn – you won’t regret a soggy trouser in sight.
