About Devon
I finally made it to Larkstone Elegance Premier in Ilfracombe after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol. Picture this: I'm bombing along the A39, past those rolling Devon hills dotted with sheep, when I realise I've left my fancy picnic hamper at a services stop. Daft as a brush, me—rummaging through the boot only to find a solitary packet of crisps and a half-eaten flapjack. Laughing at myself, I pulled over at a roadside farm shop just outside Combe Martin, stocking up on clotted cream, fresh scones, and a wedge of vintage Cheddar that smelled like heaven. Crisis averted, and my appetite properly whetted for the weekend.

Pulling up to Larkstone Elegance Premier that first afternoon felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in a quiet spot overlooking the sea, this premier cottage is all cosiness and charm—think cream-rendered walls, a private patio begging for al fresco suppers, and those massive windows framing the wild North Devon coast. I dumped my bags, kicked off my wellies, and beheaded straight to the kitchen. It's a proper chef's dream: gleaming Aga, stocked herb pots on the windowsill, and a larder begging to be filled. First impressions? This place was made for faffing about with food.

No sooner had I unpacked my farm shop haul than I was elbow-deep in a cream tea attempt. Slathered those scones with Rodda's clotted cream—thick as a dream—and strawberry jam from a local jar. Sat out on the patio with a pot of builder's tea, waves crashing below, and thought, "This is proper living." But let's be honest, my scones were a tad on the hockey puck side—slightly overbaked from nerves about getting the Aga right. Still, devoured them with a cheeky grin, crumbs everywhere, reflecting on how I'm always chasing perfection but it's the wonky bits that taste best.

Hunger struck again by evening, so I wandered down to Ilfracombe's high street, just a short stroll away. The place buzzes with that proper seaside vibe: fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, gulls squawking for chips. Popped into the local market first—Harbour Fishmongers, where the chap behind the counter slapped a glistening mackerel on the scales and chatted about the morning's catch. Grabbed some plump prawns, new potatoes, and a bunch of samphire too, all for a song. Back at the cottage, I fired up the Aga for my gourmet feast. Pan-fried the mackerel with a squeeze of lemon, wilted the samphire in butter, and boiled those spuds till fluffy. Paired it with a crisp Cornish white from the offy—bliss. The patio table groaned under the lot, sea breeze ruffling the napkins. First night, and already Larkstone felt like home.

Next morning, breakfast was a revelation. Nipped to The Quay for their legendary bacon butty—crisp rashers in a floury bap, with properHP sauce on the side. Fuelled up, I hit the weekly Ilfracombe Market on the seafront. Stalls heaving with Devon pasties (steak and stilton for me), artisan breads, and jars of fudge that could make a saint peckish. Bargained for a punnet of local strawberries and some smoked kippers, then ambled back, arms laden. At the cottage, I tried my hand at kedgeree—smoky kippers flaked into curried rice with a soft-boiled egg. Bit of a curry powder mishap left it spicier than planned, but washed down with ginger beer on the patio, it was pure joy. Chuckling over my amateur efforts, I pondered how these simple meals, surrounded by the sea's murmur, strip away the city's rush—reminding me to savour the slow burn.

That first full day wrapped with a pint and pie at The George and Dragon, a cosy Ilfracombe pub mere minutes away. Their steak and ale pie was a pastry masterpiece, gravy rich as sin, with mushy peas on the side. Back at Larkstone by dusk, I plated up market strawberries with more clotted cream for pud, sinking into the sofa with a full belly and fuller heart. Three days in Devon, and from that very first mishap-haunted arrival, this elegant haven has me hooked—pure foodie paradise.
