About Devon
I finally made it to Kingfisher Lodge near Exeter after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M5 slip road. Picture this: I'd packed the car with enough snacks to feed a rugby team, blasted some classic Fleetwood Mac, and set off from Bristol full of holiday cheer. Devon welcomed me with its usual rolling green hills and those cheeky narrow lanes that twist like a drunkard's path. But ten minutes from the lodge, disaster struck. My sat-nav, bless its unreliable soul, decided to play a prank and directed me straight into a muddy farm track. Cue me, reversing frantically as a herd of cows eyed me suspiciously, my bumper caked in Devonian sludge. I laughed it off – or tried to – while scraping off the worst with a twig. Classic me, turning a 20-minute drive into a 45-minute comedy sketch.

Pulling up to Kingfisher Lodge at last, I was knackered but buzzing. Tucked away in a quiet spot just outside Exeter, it's one of those proper Devon cottages that looks like it tumbled out of a postcard. The stone exterior with its ivy-clinging walls and thatched roof screamed "cosy rural escape," and the little garden already had me dreaming of morning coffees with a view. I fumbled the key code on the lockbox – fingers still muddy from my farmyard fiasco – and tumbled inside, dropping my bags in a heap. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first step.

The living room hit me like a warm hug. A proper wood-burning stove dominated the space, all ready with a basket of logs (note to self: don't burn the place down on night one). Plump sofas in soft greys invited a collapse, and the telly was a massive smart one – perfect for bingeing while the rain patters on the windows, as it so often does in these parts. I poked my head into the kitchen next, gleaming with granite worktops and all the gadgets: a fancy coffee machine (hallelujah), a proper Aga-style cooker, and a fridge stocked with local milk and eggs from some nearby farm. I cracked open a pasty I'd grabbed en route – Cornwall might claim them, but Devon's versions are just as moreish – and felt the chaos of arrival melting away.

Upstairs, the bedrooms were a treat. Our master had a king-sized bed piled high with duck-down duvets, and the en-suite shower was one of those rainfall jobbies that made me linger far too long, steam fogging the mirror as I scrubbed off the day's grime. The views from the window? Pure Devon magic – patchwork fields rolling out to the horizon, with the faint chime of church bells from Exeter's cathedral drifting on the breeze. It's only a short hop into the city if you fancy a wander, but honestly, who needs it when you've got this?

Wandering the garden as the sun dipped low – surprisingly golden for Devon – I spotted the hot tub bubbling away under a pergola. Tempting, but after my muddy mishap, I reckoned I'd save that for tomorrow. Instead, I fired up the barbecue (gas, thank goodness, no faffing with charcoal), grilled some sausages from the local butcher I'd detoured to earlier, and cracked a cold cider. Sitting there, feet up on the patio, I had one of those gentle moments of reflection. Life back home's been a whirlwind – deadlines, emails, the usual grind – but here, with the lodge's fairy lights twinkling on and the stars popping out one by one, I realised how daft it is not to hit pause more often. That silly sat-nav blunder? Best thing that happened. It made the arrival feel earned, turning first impressions into something properly memorable.

Kingfisher Lodge isn't just a holiday let; it's the kind of place that wraps you in Devon's charm from the off. If you're after a three-day reset without straying far from Exeter's buzz, this is your spot. Muddy tracks and all, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
