About Devon
Pulling up to Iris Lodge at Roadford Lake Lodges felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in this peaceful corner of Torridge, it's one of those hot tub lodges that promises bliss without the bells and whistles. The place is proper cosy—wooden cladding glowing in the late afternoon sun, with a veranda that just begs for a GandT. I parked up, hauled my bags inside, and was greeted by the sort of rustic charm that makes you exhale all the city tension. Compact kitchen with everything you'd need for a fry-up, a lounge with a wood burner (tempting, even in summer), and a bedroom that screamed "nap o'clock". Best bit? That private hot tub out back, steaming gently like it knew I was knackered. First impressions? Pure joy in doing bugger all. After unpacking (which took all of five minutes), I flopped onto the sofa with a cuppa and my latest paperback—a dog-eared thriller I'd been saving. The windows framed this lush garden area, alive with birdsong and the distant ripple of Roadford Lake. No rush, no plans—just me, the quiet, and the occasional rustle of leaves. It's funny how, back home, my diary's rammed with meetings and errands, but here, staring at a squirrel raiding the bird feeder felt like the height of entertainment. I nipped out for a gentle wander around the lodges' grounds—properly leisurely, mind, stopping to admire wildflowers and the odd butterfly doing its thing. Within 500 yards, you're at the lake's edge, where the water's so still it mirrors the Devon sky like a painting. Evening rolled in soft and golden. I cracked open that bottle of red, fired up the BBQ (gas, thank heavens—no faffing with charcoal), and grilled some local sausages I'd grabbed from Lifton village en route. Sat on the veranda as the sun dipped, toes dangling near the hot tub, I couldn't stop grinning. The air smelled of pine and earth, and there wasn't a soul in sight. Slipped into the tub for a soak—blissful bubbles and warmth seeping into my bones. Made a mental note: why don't I do this more often? Life's too short for constant hustling; sometimes, the best holiday is surrendering to the slow lane. Next morning—technically still first impressions, as the joy hadn't worn off—I woke to birds chirping like they were auditioning for Springwatch. Brewed coffee strong enough to wake the dead, then parked myself in the garden chair with toast and more reading. The lodge's spot is genius for this: private enough to feel yours, but with that lake view teasing gentle exploration. I ambled down to the water later, skimmed a few stones (rubbish at it, mind—most plopped like stones), and just sat on a bench, watching dragonflies dart about. No hikes, no tourist traps—just breathing it all in. Popped into nearby Broadwoodwidger for essentials (milk, pasties from the farm shop—proper Devon fuel), but honestly, the highlight was pottering back to base camp. By day three's arrival haze (okay, checkout loomed, but who’s counting?), Iris Lodge had worked its magic. That insignificant sat-nav mishap? Best thing that happened—reminded me to laugh it off and embrace the dawdle. Sitting there with a final coffee, garden humming around me, I reflected gently: I've spent too long chasing "busy". This—cosy nooks, lazy laps of the lake, books uninterrupted—is what recharges the soul. If you're after Devon done right, with zero pressure, Iris Lodge is your spot. Book it, breathe deep, and let the nothing wash over you. Pure magic. |
