About Devon
I finally made it to Huckleberry Cottage in Hope Cove after what felt like the scenic route from Salcombe, though my sat-nav had other ideas. I'd set off from the ferry port near Plymouth earlier that morning, buzzing with that holiday anticipation, only for the daft thing to direct me down a narrow Devon lane that dead-ended at a muddy farm gate. There I was, reversing my hire car with wing mirrors scraping hedges, muttering about technology's betrayal while a cheeky herd of cows watched like they owned the place. A quick U-turn and ten extra minutes later, I trundled into Hope Cove, the sea mist lifting just enough to reveal this gem of a cottage tucked into the hillside.

Pulling up outside Huckleberry Cottage, I was smitten straight away. It's one of those classic Devon boltholes – a cosy, whitewashed stone cottage with a thatched roof that screams "proper countryside escape." The owner, a lovely chap called Mike, handed over the keys with a grin and a warning about the resident robins pinching your breakfast crumbs. I dumped my bags in the hallway, which smelled faintly of woodsmoke and lavender, and stepped straight into the garden. Blimey, what a spot. Overlooking the curve of Hope Cove's beach, with waves crashing below and gulls wheeling overhead, it was like the world had hit pause. I plonked myself in a weathered deckchair, cracked open a thermos of tea I'd brought, and just... breathed. No agenda, no rush – just the joy of doing bugger all.

The cottage itself is pure hygge, Devon-style. The living room's got a wood-burning stove (unlit, as it was a balmy August afternoon), squishy sofas piled with cushions, and a telly I ignored in favour of the view through the big sash windows. I wandered into the kitchen – compact but brilliant, with all the kit for lazy self-catering: a retro Aga humming away, fresh eggs from local hens in the fridge (cheers, Mike), and a loaf of bread from the village shop down the hill. First impressions? It felt like slipping into an old friend's hug. No pretensions, just comforting nooks for reading or napping.

That first afternoon, I barely moved. I cracked open my book – some dog-eared P.G. Wodehouse for light relief – and lost hours to Jeeves and Wooster while the sun dipped towards the sea. A gentle breeze rustled the fuchsias in the garden, and every so often I'd glance up at the fishing boats bobbing in the cove. It's funny how you arrive frazzled from city life, emails pinging in your head, and within minutes, you're plotting nothing more ambitious than a saunter to the beach. Which I did, eventually. A five-minute wander down the cliff path led to the sand, where I kicked off my trainers and paddled in the chilly surf, dodging jellyfish like a pro. The beach is proper Devon – shingle and sand mix, rock pools teeming with crabs, and not a soul in sight bar a Labrador chasing waves.

As evening rolled in, I rustled up supper: scrambled eggs on toast, eaten on the patio with a glass of local Otter Ale. Stars popped out over the dark sea, and I had a proper moment of reflection there, feet up on a stool. Back home, I'm always chasing the next thing – promotion, deadline, gym session. Here, at Huckleberry Cottage, doing very little felt revolutionary. It's the slowness that hits you: time to notice the salt on the air, the way the cottage creaks like it's settling into a nap with you. No grand adventures needed; just this quiet joy in the ordinary.

The next morning dawned misty, but I was already hooked on the rhythm – brew in hand, garden lounging, maybe a gentle amble to the Hope Cove café for a pasty later. My three days blurred into perfect inertia, proving sometimes the best holiday is the one where you achieve precisely nowt, and love every lazy minute. If you're after that Devon magic of slowing right down, Huckleberry Cottage is your spot.
