About Devon
Pulling up to Driftwood Beach Cabin around lunchtime, I was knackered but instantly smitten. Tucked right on the pebbled fringe of a secluded cove, just a stone's throw from Ilfracombe's wild coastline, it's the sort of place that screams "get off your phone and breathe." The cabin itself is this quirky wooden gem, perched with killer views over the Atlantic – waves crashing below, gulls wheeling overhead. I parked on the gravel patch (carefully, mind, after the mirror fiasco), grabbed my rucksack, and fumbled the key safe code with salt-stiffened fingers. Inside, it was pure cosy magic: low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burner begging for a fire, and a kitchenette stocked with tea towels and that faint seaside tang you can't fake. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. I dumped my bag and made straight for the picture windows – floor-to-ceiling glass framing the beach like a living painting. The tide was out, revealing a stretch of smooth pebbles and rock pools glittering in the weak March sun. I couldn't resist; boots still on, I dashed down the steps to the sand. The air hit me like a slap – briny, invigorating, with that unmistakable Devon chill that nips at your cheeks. Picked up a fossilised ammonite or two (okay, maybe nicked a pebble for luck), and just stood there, waves lapping at my toes, feeling the chaos of the drive melt away. Popped back up for a brew – proper builder's tea from the provided caddy – and settled into the squishy sofa. The place had that lived-in charm: nautical charts on the walls, a stack of dog-eared paperbacks by the fire, and a telly for rainy evenings (though who needs it with this view?). Lunch was simple – cheese sarnies from the Ilfracombe Co-op I'd grabbed en route – eaten at the picnic bench outside, watching seals bob in the bay. Hilarious moment: a cheeky jackdaw dive-bombed my crisps, making off with a cheese-and-onion like a feathered bandit. Laughed till I snorted tea, then chased it off with a tea towel wave. As the afternoon light dipped golden over the cliffs, I wandered the cove path – all 200 yards of it to the water's edge – spotting limpets and seaweed drifts. No crowds, just me, the sea, and the odd dog-walker from the nearby holiday park. It got me reflecting, didn't it? Sat on a driftwood log (ironic, given the name), I pondered how we'd all rush about, stressing over wrong turns and wing mirrors, when paradise is literally just a coastal lane away. Driftwood Beach Cabin nailed that first hit of serenity; arrival mayhem aside, it's the perfect Devon bolthole for recharging. Can't wait to return – mirror scratch and all. |
