About Devon
I finally made it to Coombe Valley Shepherd's Hut after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Exeter. Picture this: I'm trundling along those narrow Devon lanes, windows down, radio blasting some cracking indie tunes, when – splat! – a rogue pheasant decides to play chicken with my windscreen. No harm done, just a feathery feather or two and me laughing like a loon at my own startled yelp. Classic me, turning a 20-minute jaunt into a wildlife documentary moment. But honestly, it set the perfect tone for what turned out to be the most gloriously idle three days of my year.

Pulling up to the hut, tucked away in a peaceful nook just outside Newton Abbot, I was smitten straight away. It's this darling little shepherd's hut, all rustic charm with a wood-burner peeking through the window and a veranda begging for a cuppa. The owner, a lovely chap named Tom, greeted me with a wave and pointed out the fresh eggs from his chickens – proper farm-fresh, still warm. I lugged my bag (overpacked as usual, with three books I knew I'd barely crack) the few steps to the door, and there it was: my three-day ticket to doing sod all.

First impressions? Pure bliss. The hut's compact but cosy as anything – a double bed piled high with quilts, a teeny kitchenette stocked with tea, coffee, and even some local cider, and that veranda overlooking a wildflower meadow. I flopped onto the outdoor sofa with a brew, feet up, and just... breathed. No emails pinging, no deadlines looming. Just the hum of bees and the distant moo of cows from a nearby field. Devon does this slowing-down thing so well; it's like the air itself whispers, "Chill out, mate."

Day one was all about settling in and embracing the joy of bugger all. I pottered in the garden – or what felt like my private garden, really – picking herbs for a lazy lunch of cheese on toast (using those eggs scrambled, naturally). The sun filtered through the trees, and I spent hours reading my dog-eared copy of *The Wind in the Willows*. Kenneth Grahame gets Devon, doesn't he? All that gentle countryside magic. I chuckled at Ratty and Mole's adventures, thinking how I'd swapped my usual frantic scrolling for this. Light humour in the hut's loo too – a quirky composting one with a cheeky sign saying "If it's yellow, let it mellow." Proper eco-laughs.

A gentle wander down the lane – no more than a mile – took me to a quiet spot by the River Teign. I skimmed stones like a kid, watched the water gurgle over pebbles, and felt that rare pang of self-reflection. Lately, life's been a non-stop whirl of work and worries. Here, staring at the rippling river, I realised how knackered I'd been. Slowing down isn't lazy; it's essential. Like recharging your phone before it bricks. I headed back, grabbed a GandT from the mini-fridge, and lounged on the veranda till dusk, watching bats flit about.

Evening brought the wood-burner to life – crackling away as I toasted crumpets and sipped more cider. No grand plans, no rushing off to tourist traps. Just me, the stars popping out over the valley, and a profound contentment in doing precisely nowt. The hut's magic is in that stillness; it's designed for folk like me who need permission to pause.

By the end of those first hours, I was hooked. Coombe Valley Shepherd's Hut isn't about ticking boxes – it's about savouring the unhurried heartbeat of Devon. If you're craving a reset, book it. You'll arrive frazzled, leave floaty. I know I did.
