About Devon
First impressions? Pure magic, laced with that quirky Devon charm you only get from the locals. No sooner had we unloaded the boot than old Reg shuffled over from the neighbouring pitch, his wellies caked in what I reckon was a mix of lake mud and stubborn pride. Reg must’ve been in his seventies, with a face like weathered Dartmoor granite and a flat cap that’d seen better decades. “You lot from upcountry, eh? Londoners?” he eyed us suspiciously, leaning on his fishing rod like Moses with his staff. I confessed we were from Bristol—close enough to “upcountry” for him—and he launched into a yarn about the time a pike the size of a submarine nipped his thumb during the 1983 floods. “Mind the otters, mind,” he warned with a wink. “They’ve got more front than a bull in a bucket.” We were hooked already, cracking up as he demonstrated the “proper” way to cast a line, which involved more swearing at the wind than actual fishing. The next morning, still buzzing from arrival vibes, we wandered down to the lake’s edge for a brew, and that’s when we met Tina, the warden with a laugh like a foghorn and stories to match. She was tending the wildflower meadow nearby, her tabby cat Twinkle weaving round her ankles like it owned the place. “New to Buttercup, are ya? Best lodge here—views to die for, and the kingfishers’ll wake you at dawn if the owls don’t.” Tina’s Devon drawl was thick as clotted cream; she reckoned she’d lived round these parts since Noah’s ark floated by. Over mugs of builder’s tea (proper strong, none of your leafy nonsense), she regaled us with tales of the village hall barn dances—“last one, Madge from the farm two miles off lost her false teeth in the conga line!”—and how the lake’s canoe club once had a “paddle-off” with the local trout farmers that ended in soggy handshakes and free smoked fish. Dave tried flirting for insider tips on the best pub grub, but Tina saw right through him: “Lad, you couldn’t charm a gull off a pasty. Stick to the lodge barbecue.” By afternoon, we’d bumped into young Jax, the lad who runs the on-site bike hire—mid-twenties, tattooed arms, with a beard that could hide a pasty or two. He was tinkering with a tandem, muttering about “tourists who think pedalling’s optional.” Jax shared how he’d grown up fishing these waters, dodging his nan’s lectures on “proper jobs.” “Lodge life’s grand,” he grinned, “but wait’ll you hear the foxes at midnight—they sound like a bleedin’ ceilidh.” His easy banter had us in stitches, especially when he confessed to once mistaking a badger for a lost spaniel and ending up with a face full of claws. Strolling back to Buttercup as dusk fell, the lake mirroring the pinking sky, I had one of those quiet moments. Sat on the deck with a pint, listening to the water lap and Reg’s distant whistle, I reflected on how these characters—Reg’s gruff wisdom, Tina’s booming warmth, Jax’s cheeky spark—make a place like this sing. In our rush-rush lives, it’s the quirky chats that stick, reminding you life’s too short for sat-nav tantrums. First impressions at Buttercup Lodge? Bloody brilliant, thanks to the people. Can’t wait to go back. |
