About Devon
I finally made it to Broadpath in Braunton after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M5. Picture this: I'd packed the car with enough snacks to feed a rugby team, blasted some classic Fleetwood Mac to get in the holiday mood, and set off from Bristol bright and early. Devon, eh? Those rolling hills and narrow lanes are postcard-perfect, but they're also a right faff when you're late because your sat-nav decides to have a mid-journey existential crisis. Mine kept rerouting me down what I swear was a goat track near Barnstaple, complete with a flock of sheep blocking the way. I honked gently (well, not that gently), one ewe gave me a filthy look, and I spilled my coffee all over the passenger seat. Classic me – turning a two-hour drive into a three-hour comedy of errors. By the time I pulled up to Broadpath Great Field Lodges, I was frazzled, caffeine-deprived, and questioning my life choices.

Stumbling out of the car, I was greeted by this absolute gem of a place tucked away in the North Devon countryside, just a stone's throw from Braunton. Broadpath itself is one of those wooden lodges that screams "cosy escape" – all cedar cladding, pitched roof, and a little veranda that practically begs for a GandT at sunset. The site's surrounded by lush fields, with the faint hum of the nearby Taw-Torridge estuary in the air, and not a whiff of city stress. I dumped my bags and had a proper nose around, still shaking off the arrival chaos. The lodge is compact but brilliant: open-plan living with a squishy sofa facing a wood-burning stove (mental note: light that later), a kitchenette stocked with all the essentials, and a bedroom that overlooks the rolling green. Spotless, too – fresh linen, fluffy towels, the works. I felt the tension melt away faster than my spilled latte.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Stepping onto the deck, I could see Saunton Sands glinting in the distance, all golden and inviting, maybe a couple of miles off. The air was that crisp, briny Devon breeze, laced with wildflowers and the promise of proper cream teas. I wandered the site a bit – it's peaceful, with a few other lodges dotted about but plenty of space to feel private. No hordes of tourists here; just the odd dog walker and the soundtrack of birdsong. I chuckled to myself, thinking how I'd gone from sheep-induced road rage to this slice of paradise in under an hour. That mishap with the sat-nav? Best thing that happened – it made arriving feel like cracking open a cold beer after a long shift.

As the sun dipped lower, painting the fields in that soft Devonian gold, I plonked myself on the veranda with a cuppa, feet up, and let out a massive sigh. Here's a bit of gentle reflection amid the glow: life's too short for perfect plans. That daft drive reminded me why I love these getaways – the chaos strips away the everyday grind, leaving just you, a cracking view, and the simple joy of being somewhere real. Broadpath nailed it from the off. No faffing about with check-in (key safe, sorted), just instant immersion in that laid-back Devon vibe. I was already plotting a gentle stroll to Braunton Burrows tomorrow – dunes, wildlife, the lot – but for now, first impressions had me hooked. If you're after a bolthole that feels like a hug from the countryside, this is it. Can't wait for day two.
