About Devon
Bluebell Lodge is a gem, tucked right on the edge of Roadford Lake in the Torridge District. It's one of those wooden lodges that screams "get back to nature," with a veranda overlooking the water and woods. First impressions? Bliss. Stepped inside to a cosy open-plan living area, wood-burner ready to roar, and a kitchen stocked with all the teas you could want—essential for a Brit facing unpredictable weather. The bedroom views straight out to the lake had me dropping my bags and just staring. No signal on the phone either, which was a happy accident; forced me to unplug properly. Day one, I was itching for a hike. The lady at reception (lovely sort, full of local tips) pointed me to the Roadford Lake trails—miles of permissive paths winding through ancient woodland and along the shoreline. "Mind the weather," she winked. I set off optimistic, boots laced, thermos of builder's tea in hand. The initial stretch was magic: sunlight dappling through oak and hazel, buzzards wheeling overhead, and that fresh, earthy Devon smell after rain. Spotted a kingfisher darting across the lake—proper wildlife moment. But half an hour in, the clouds rolled in like they owned the place. Started with a drizzle, then escalated to a full-on downpour. Laugh out loud, there I was, hood up, trudging back, looking like a drowned rat. Plan A—epic four-mile loop—scrapped. Instead, I holed up on the veranda under the lodge's overhang, watching the lake whip up into frothy waves. Cuppa in hand, it turned into an unexpected highlight: the rain drumming on the roof, turning the world misty and mysterious. Next morning, undeterred, I tried again. Weather app promised "bright intervals," which in British-speak means "maybe." Hit the lakeside path early, and blimey, it delivered—crisp blue skies, the water sparkling like it was on a holiday brochure. Hiked the full woodland circuit, about three miles of gentle ups and downs, passing fishing platforms and bird hides. Paused for a cheeky sandwich on a bench, feet dangling near the water, feeling like I'd cracked the countryside code. But true to form, by noon the wind picked up, scudding clouds across the sky. Gusts rattling the trees, threatening another soaking. I adapted sharpish, cutting short to explore the closer meadow trails instead—shorter loops with views back to the lodge. Dodged the worst by ducking into a copse, emerging triumphant if a tad windswept. That evening, reflecting over a GandT as the sun dipped behind the hills (briefly piercing the clouds), I had one of those moments. Here I was, mid-forties, chasing hikes in the clag when a Netflix binge back home would've been easier. But there's something about Devon's fickle weather that mirrors life, innit? You plan, it throws a curveball, you laugh it off and keep walking. Bluebell Lodge nailed that first-impression magic—cosy haven amid the elements, trails on your doorstep begging for whatever the sky dishes out. By the third day, even the squalls felt like old mates. If you're after a walking weekend where Mother Nature calls the shots, this is your spot. Just pack the waterproofs—and a sense of humour. |
