I finally made it to Ilfracombe after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol – nothing major, just a rogue seagull dive-bombing my windscreen with what looked suspiciously like a chip, forcing me to pull over for a quick wipe-down and a chuckle at my misfortune. It was a 20-minute plod from the lodge downhill, past candy-striped houses and pasty shops tempting me with their aromas. Laughing at my sodden self, I ducked into a nearby tearoom on the high street for a cream tea rescue – scones jammed and clotted to perfection, naturally. Proper Devonian fuel. The wind howled outside, whipping the sea into froth, so I pivoted to a sheltered wander along Capstone Hill, closer to home base. It's only a mile or so from the lodge, but the views over the town and out to Lundy Island were epic, even through the squall. Muddy paths squelched underfoot, testing my resolve, but that fresh, briny air cleared the cobwebs like nothing else.

By evening, back at the lodge towelling off, the fire crackling and a stew bubbling, I reflected on the day's chaos with a wry smile. The weather had scuppered the grand hikes, but it forced me into those intimate, character-building rambles – the kind that stick in your memory. First impressions? This 3-bed gem had delivered a cracking start: comfort amid the elements, with Ilfracombe's wild walks right on the doorstep. If Devon's drizzle is the price for such beauty, I'll pay it every time.
