About Devon
I finally made it to that charming 2 Bed Lodge in Romansleigh after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Exeter. Picture this: I'm humming along the A361, windows down, proper Devon air rushing in—cow parsley and all—when I take a wrong turn onto some nameless lane narrower than my Nan's spatula. The SatNav goes into meltdown, chirping "recalculating" like it's got a personal grudge, and suddenly I'm nose-to-nose with a sheep that looks at me like I've gatecrashed its spa day. Classic me, turning a two-hour jaunt into a three-hour comedy of errors. But honestly, that mishap was the best thing that happened—because from there, everything about this little corner of North Devon unfolded like a secret map only I had.

Pulling up to the lodge just as the sun dipped low, I was gobsmacked. Tucked away in Romansleigh's sleepy hamlet, it's the sort of place you'd miss if you blinked—wooden beams, a cosy porch groaning under honeysuckle, and views over rolling fields that scream "proper countryside." No thumping music or tourist hordes; just the lodge, a couple of stone cottages nearby, and birds doing their evening shift. I dumped my bags, cracked open a tin of Cornish pasty (grabbed from a services en route), and stepped out for a proper gander. First impressions? Blissful isolation. The kind where you hear your own thoughts, which is rare for a city lad like me.

Wandering aimlessly that first afternoon—my favourite way to "explore"—I stumbled on what I now call my accidental gems. Barely a mile from the lodge, down a footpath signposted "public bridleway" (more like "locals only"), I found a babbling brook hidden by ferns taller than me. No Instagram influencers in sight; just dragonflies zipping about and a heron giving me the side-eye from a rock. I plonked down with a brew from my flask, feet in the water, and it felt like I'd nicked a piece of Eden. Who needs TripAdvisor when getting lost pays off like this?

Day two kicked off with mist clinging to the valleys, and I let curiosity be my guide—no maps, just trainers and a rucksack. Veering off the lane behind the lodge, I tripped over (literally) a forgotten orchard, apples windfalls everywhere, gnarled trees heavy with fruit that tasted like they'd been kissed by the sun. Romansleigh's got these pockets of magic if you stray from the tarmac: a dew-pond where wild ponies grazed, their manes all windswept and Exmoor-wild, and a dew-soaked meadow perfect for a lie-down, staring at clouds that looked like cider mugs. I chuckled to myself, thinking how I'd planned a "proper itinerary" back home, only to bin it for this joyful meandering. It's liberating, innit? No deadlines, no crowds—just you, the hedgerows, and the thrill of what’s round the next bend.

That evening, back at the lodge, I lit the wood burner (stocked with logs that caught like a dream) and reflected over a cuppa. Sat there in the gathering dusk, with the hills fading to purple, I had one of those quiet moments: life's too short for signposted paths. That sheep-blocked detour? It led me here, to Romansleigh's hidden heartbeat—the brooks, the ponies, the orchards you find only when you let go. This three-day jaunt's first impressions have me hooked; who knows what other secrets lurk a stumble away? If you're after Devon's soul, not its selfies, this lodge is your portal.
