About Devon
Pulling up to the lodge around midday, I was knackered but grinning like an idiot. Nestled in a quiet spot on the edge of the village, it's one of those proper Devon hideaways – a snug wooden lodge with a pitched roof, surrounded by lush green fields and the sort of birdsong that makes you forget city life exists. The owner, a cheery local chap named Mike, was there to greet me with a wave and a mug of tea. "Don't worry about the lanes, love," he chuckled, "they've caught out tougher drivers than you." We had a right natter about village life – turns out Kentisbeare's got that timeless East Devon charm, with its thatched cottages and a pub just a stroll away. Stepping inside was pure magic. The open-plan living space hit me first: a compact kitchenette gleaming with everything you'd need for a lazy fry-up, and a living area with a plush sofa begging you to flop down with a book. The woodburner was laid ready with logs (bliss for later), and big windows framed views of rolling paddocks dotted with sheep. Up a few steps, the bedroom was a dream – kingsize bed piled high with fluffy duvets, and an en-suite that's small but spotless, with a powerful shower that blasted away the drive's stress in seconds. First impressions? It felt like stepping into someone's favourite auntie's hug – warm, unpretentious, and just right for one. I dumped my bags and headed out for a proper mooch around the immediate area, still buzzing from the chaos of getting there. A five-minute wander took me to the heart of Kentisbeare, where the 13th-century church peals softly in the background, and the village green looks like it's straight out of a postcard. Popped into the local shop for milk and a pasty – proper Devonian fuel – and nattered with the postie about the best blackberry-picking spots nearby. Back at the lodge, I fired up the barbecue on the private decked patio (what a treat – sheltered and with that unbeatable countryside vista). Sizzling sausages as the sun dipped low, I couldn't help but laugh at my earlier muddle. Why do I always dive headfirst into these scrapes? As I sat there with a cold cider, watching rabbits hop about in the twilight, a bit of gentle reflection snuck in. Life back home's all rush and deadlines, but this little lodge in Kentisbeare? It's a reminder that sometimes the best holidays start with a cock-up and end with you feeling utterly content. First impressions don't get much better – chaotic arrival and all. Can't wait to see what the next couple of days bring. |
