About Devon
I finally made it to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in Fairy Cross after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Exeter. We'd set off bright and early for our three-day family break in Devon, me, my partner Sarah, and our cheeky five-year-old, Finn. The sat-nav was doing its usual dance, insisting we take a detour through some winding lanes that felt more like goat tracks than roads. Then, the insignificant mishap: about five miles out, Finn decided it was the perfect moment to spill his entire packet of custard creams across the back seat. Biscuit crumbs everywhere, him giggling like a loon, and me hoovering them up with one hand while steering with the other. Classic lodge holiday chaos before we'd even arrived – but hey, that's the joy of it, innit?

Pulling up to the lodge just after lunch, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in this peaceful spot near Fairy Cross, it's one of those proper Devon hideaways – a snug one-bed timber number surrounded by lush green fields and the sort of rolling countryside that makes you breathe easier. The owners had left the key in a handy box by the door, and as we tumbled out of the car, lugging our overstuffed bags, the fresh air hit us like a tonic. No traffic hum, just birdsong and the distant bleat of sheep. Finn was off like a shot, exploring the little patio with its picnic bench, declaring it his "pirate ship deck."

Stepping inside, my first impressions were spot on for that relaxed family vibe we'd been craving. The open-plan living space is compact but clever – a squishy sofa facing a wood-burning stove (we chucked a few logs on later for that authentic crackle), a telly for rainy days, and a kitchenette kitted out with everything you'd need for bacon butties and cups of tea. I love how it's all low-key luxury: fluffy towels folded just so, a proper kettle for builder's brew, and fresh milk in the fridge. Sarah clocked the king-sized bed in the bedroom straight away – "Finally, a decent kip after Finn's midnight wake-ups," she laughed. There's even a pull-out truckle bed for the little one, which he immediately claimed as his "secret fort."

We dumped our stuff and cracked on with settling in, the sort of simple pleasures that make a lodge stay magic. First job: brew up and unpack the pasty I'd grabbed from a farm shop en route – proper Devonian fuel, stuffed with steak and spuds. Sat out on that patio, munching away, we watched the sun dip behind the hedges, turning the sky all pink and gold. Finn found a patch of wildflowers and started making "magic potions" with handfuls of daisies and grass, which mostly ended up smeared on his face. I couldn't help chuckling – here we were, knee-deep in lodge life chaos, but it felt brilliant. No schedules, no screens pinging, just us lot faffing about.

As the afternoon wore on, we wandered the immediate grounds, spotting butterflies flitting about and a cheeky robin eyeing our crumbs. The lodge backs onto those typical Devon meadows, with hedges buzzing with bees – close enough to feel wild, but safe for Finn to potter without us hovering. I had a gentle moment of self-reflection then, leaning on the fence with my tea going cold. Life back home's a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but out here, it's like pressing pause. Makes you realise how these little escapes recharge the batteries, even if it means embracing the odd biscuit apocalypse.

By evening, we'd lit the stove, rustled up fish fingers and beans (gourmet, obviously), and sprawled out with a board game that descended into giggles and mild cheating accusations. First impressions? This 1 Bed Lodge in Fairy Cross nailed it for a chilled family break – intimate, comfy, and full of those unhurried Devon moments that stick with you. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but right now, it's perfection.
