About Cotswolds
Turning off the main road into that quiet lane felt like slipping into a different world. The lodge is tucked away in a peaceful spot just on the edge of Cirencester, surrounded by those rolling fields that scream proper English countryside. As I parked up, the sun was dipping low, casting this golden glow over the honey-stone walls and the thatched roof. It's one of those classic Cotswold lodges – not massive, but just right for a family or a few mates, with three cosy bedrooms that promise proper kip after a day of... well, not much at all. Stepping inside for the first time was pure bliss. The living room hit me with that instant "ahh" feeling – a wood-burning stove begging to be lit (though it was a balmy evening, so I held off), squishy sofas piled with cushions, and a telly for rainy days, but honestly, who needs it? The kitchen was kitted out nicely, with everything you'd want for knocking up a lazy fry-up or heating a pasty from the local shop. I dumped my bags and cracked open a window; the air smelled of fresh grass and wildflowers, no traffic fumes in sight. First impressions? This place was made for doing sod all, and I was here for it. After unpacking (which took all of five minutes), I wandered out to the garden. It's a proper suntrap, enclosed and private, with a patio table, chairs, and a barbecue that looked like it hadn't seen much action lately – perfect for my plan of zero effort. I plonked myself down with a cuppa and a book I'd been meaning to read for months. The birds were chirping away, and in the distance, you could hear the odd sheep bleating. No rush, no agenda. Just me, the garden, and the kind of peace that makes city life feel like a bad dream. That evening, I couldn't resist a gentle potter into Cirencester itself – it's only a short stroll away, after all. The market square was buzzing in that understated Cotswold way: a few locals nattering outside the bakery, the old market cross standing proud. I grabbed some cheese and bread from a deli, nothing fancy, and ambled back as the streetlights flickered on. Sat in the garden munching it all, watching the sunset paint the sky pink over the fields. Bloody marvellous. The joy of it all was slowing right down. No timetables, no scrolling endlessly on the phone. My first full morning? Lounging in the garden with more coffee, flipping pages in the sun, letting my mind wander. Later, a slow walk along the nearby paths – spotting hares in the meadows, breathing in that crisp air. It's funny how we pack our holidays with "must-sees," but here, the real magic was in the nothing. A gentle nudge to myself: life's too short not to savour these idle moments. By day two, I'd lit that stove just for the crackle and smell, curled up on the sofa with tea, staring out at the garden as a light drizzle pattered down. Proper hygge, Cotswold-style. The lodge wrapped around you like a favourite jumper – warm, unpretentious, inviting you to linger. No grand adventures needed; this was holiday heaven in the art of bugger all. If you're after a reset, this is your spot. I left feeling lighter, already plotting a return. |
