About Cotswolds
Pulling up to the lodge just as the low afternoon sun dipped behind the rolling hills, I was gobsmacked by how perfectly it embodied that autumnal magic. Nestled in a quiet spot near Cirencester, it’s a cosy wooden lodge with those classic honey-coloured stone accents, smoke curling lazily from the chimney like an invitation. The air was thick with that earthy scent of damp leaves and woodsmoke, and Monty went berserk, nose twitching at every crunchy fallen conker underfoot. Unlocking the door – key tucked under a flowerpot, proper old-school – we stepped into a warm hug of a space. Two snug bedrooms upstairs, both with those low-beamed ceilings that make you duck if you’re tall like me, and a living area dominated by the fireplace, already stacked with logs that crackled to life with the first match. It sleeps four easy, but it was just us three, which meant plenty of room to sprawl. First impressions? Pure seasonal bliss. Outside, the garden was a riot of autumn colour – golden larches rustling in the breeze, and a carpet of leaves that Monty immediately turned into his personal playground, chasing them into little whirlwinds. I grabbed a cuppa from the well-stocked kitchen (kettle on before bags were even unpacked, naturally) and just stood there on the patio, mug steaming in the sharp air, watching mist roll in from the nearby fields. It was that time of year when the light turns everything honeyed and soft, perfect for snapping a few dodgy phone pics that somehow looked like they were from a posh calendar. The pet-friendly vibe was spot-on too; Monty claimed a corner by the fire as his throne, tail thumping like a metronome. As evening drew in, the real star emerged: that fireplace. With the nights drawing shorter and the temperature plummeting – proper frosty edges on the windows by dusk – we lit it up, and blimey, it transformed the lodge into a glowing haven. Flames dancing, casting flickering shadows on the walls adorned with horse brasses and local art, we tucked into cheese on toast (nothing fancy, mind – there’s a cracking farm shop five minutes away for supplies). Monty snored contentedly, belly full of illicit treats, while we sipped mulled wine I’d rustled up from the cupboard stash. The quiet was profound, broken only by the hoot of an owl and the occasional rustle of wind through the trees – no light pollution, just stars peeking through the branches like diamonds on velvet. Sitting there, flames warming my socks, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life back home in the city rushes by like a freight train, all deadlines and din, but here, in this autumn embrace of the Cotswolds, time slowed to a gentle amble. It made me think how we all need these pockets of stillness, especially when the leaves are falling and reminding us nothing lasts forever. That first evening set the tone for our three-day jaunt – no grand plans, just soaking in the season’s mellow fruitfulness from our perfect little lodge. If you’re after a pet-welcoming retreat with a heart of fire, this is the spot. Bloody brilliant. |
