About Cornwall
I finally made it to Tresco, that cosy little cottage tucked away near Redruth in Cornwall, after what felt like the most faff-filled drive down from up country. Picture this: I'd packed the car the night before, all smug with my playlist of sea shanties and a thermos of builders' tea, dreaming of pasties and past glories. But no, about 20 minutes into Devon, I realised I'd left my phone charger at home. Proper numpty moment. Panicking, I pulled into a services, bought the cheapest one they had – a dodgy thing that kept sparking like it was auditioning for Bonfire Night – and carried on, swearing under my breath the whole way. By the time I hit the A30, the sat nav (on said sparking charger) was glitching, rerouting me through every tractor-paced back lane in Cornwall. Two hours late, sweaty and frazzled, I rolled up to Tresco just as the sun dipped low over the moors.

Stumbling out of the car, I was hit by that instant Cornish magic – the air thick with salt and gorse, a cheeky breeze rustling the hedges around the cottage. Tresco's one of those classic stone-built jobbies, all whitewashed walls and a thatched roof that screams "welcome, you weary traveller." It's right on the edge of a quiet hamlet, maybe a couple of miles from Redruth town, with views that stretch out to the wild bits of the Lizard peninsula without you even needing to move. I fumbled the key from under the flowerpot (as per the instructions – very trusting, these Snaptrip lot), and pushed open the door to a waft of fresh linen and wood polish. Inside, it was pure homely bliss: low-beamed ceilings, a wood burner begging for a match, and a kitchen that looked like it could whip up a cream tea in seconds. The living room had these squashy sofas facing a telly bigger than my flat's, and upstairs, the bedrooms were snug as a bug, with windows framing the rolling fields.

First impressions? Absolute cracker. I dumped my bags, cracked open a tin of sardines (emergency rations from the boot), and just sat there on the patio, feet up on a rickety bench, sipping a cold cider from the local shop I'd spotted en route. The garden's a riot of wildflowers and herbs – lavender, rosemary, the works – buzzing with bees that were far more polite than my sat nav. In the distance, you could hear the faint rumble of the train to Penzance, but otherwise, it was dead peaceful, just the odd seagull having a right old chinwag. I chuckled to myself about the charger fiasco; here I was, miles from the rat race, and that silly mishap felt like a lifetime ago. Made me reflect a bit, you know? Life's too short for perfect plans – sometimes the chaos gets you to the good stuff quicker.

Wandering the garden paths at dusk, I spotted a couple of hens clucking about in the neighbouring plot, and the sunset turned the sky all pink and gold over the hills. Popped down to the nearby farm shop – five minutes' drive, if that – for some proper clotted cream and scones, and back at Tresco, I lit that wood burner for the crackle of it. Curled up with a book about Cornish smugglers, I thought, "This is it, innit? Three days of this heaven." The cottage felt like it'd been waiting for me, all warm and unpretentious, with its quirky creaky stairs and that one wonky door that swings shut on your arse if you're not quick. No five-star fuss, just real, solid comfort that makes you breathe easier.

By bedtime, with the stars popping out like someone had flicked a switch, I was already plotting tomorrow's jaunt to the cliffs at Hell's Mouth – only a short hop away. But that first evening at Tresco? Pure gold. Messy arrival and all, it was the perfect reset. Cornwall, you've got me hooked.
