About Cornwall
I finally made it to Towans Retreat after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Devon. Picture this: I'm trundling along the A30, past Bodmin Moor, with the radio blasting some cracking indie tunes, when—bam—my sat-nav decides to throw a wobbly and sends me on a wild goose chase down a single-track lane that looked more like a sheep's personal runway. Twenty minutes of reversing etiquette with a local farmer later, I emerged, slightly frazzled but laughing at my own daftness, right into the car park at Harvey's Yard in Hayle. It was one of those classic Cornish moments where you realise the journey's half the fun, even if it involves mild panic.

Pulling up to the place on that sunny Friday afternoon, I was proper chuffed. Towans Retreat is this cracking little haven tucked away in a quiet yard just off the high street—close enough to nipping out for a pasty but far enough to feel like your own secret bolthole. The lodge itself is a cosy two-bedder, all stone floors and wooden beams, with a wood burner that screamed "cosy nights in" even in summer. I dumped my bags, cracked open the French doors to the private patio, and just... breathed. After the drive, it felt like sinking into a feather bed. First impressions? Pure bliss. No grand plans, no itinerary—just the joy of doing bugger all, properly.

That first afternoon set the tone. I mooched about the garden, which is a proper suntrap enclosed by hedges buzzing with bees. Plonked myself in one of the rattan chairs with a cuppa and a dog-eared copy of some Poldark novel I'd packed—ironic, given we're in Cornwall. The sun filtered through the leaves, and I could hear the distant crash of waves from Hayle Towans beach, maybe a ten-minute wander away. No rush to get there, mind. I just sat, letting the world slow down. It's funny how you don't notice how wired you are until you stop. I caught myself smiling at nothing, thinking, "This is it, innit? This is living."

Evening rolled in lazy-like. I ambled down to the high street—five minutes on foot—for fish and chips from a chippy that smelled like heaven. Back at the lodge, I lit the burner (even though it wasn't cold, because why not?), scoffed my supper on the patio, and watched the sky turn that mad Cornish pink over the dunes. No telly, no scrolling—just the crackle of logs and a cheeky glass of local Rattler cider. I chuckled to myself about that sat-nav fiasco earlier; if it hadn't happened, I might've rushed straight here and missed savouring the arrival.

Day two was more of the same, and I loved every minute. Morning coffee in the garden, feet up, flicking through pages while a light breeze rustled the palms. Around noon, I fancied a gentle explore—strolled to the nearby estuary where the water sparkles like jewels, watched dog-walkers and paddleboarders, but didn't join in. Back for lunch (cheese toastie, naturally), then an afternoon nap on the sofa, book splayed open on my chest. It's the kind of idleness that feels indulgent, isn't it? No guilt, just contentment. I reflected quietly then, gazing out at the garden: life's too short for constant hustle. Here, in this little retreat, I was recharging my soul, one slow breath at a time.

By the third day, departing felt bittersweet. One last lazy brekkie—porridge with local honey—lingering over the papers in the sun-dappled conservatory. Towans Retreat had worked its magic; three days of sweet nothing, and I felt brand new. If you're after Cornwall without the crowds or the car parks, this is your spot. Bloody brilliant.
