About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Bude in Cornwall for my three-day jaunt to The Secret Roundhouse – or as the booking called it, that wonderful Bude lodge tucked away like a hidden gem. The satnav had other ideas, though, cheekily directing me onto a narrow lane that dead-ended at a cowpat-strewn field. “Recalculating,” it chirped, as I reversed into a hedge, swearing under my breath. Minor mishap, but it set the tone for a proper Cornish adventure, full of quirky characters who turned my first impressions into pure gold.

Pulling up to the roundhouse just after lunch, I was gobsmacked. Perched on the edge of Bude’s Stratton outskirts, it’s this cosy, circular beauty – all curved stone walls and a thatched roof that screams “secret hideaway.” The garden’s a riot of wildflowers, buzzing with bees, and the sea’s whisper is just a stroll away down to Summerleaze Beach. But honestly, it was the locals who stole the show from the off. First up was Mick, the handyman popping by to check the hot tub (yes, it has one – heaven). He’s this wiry bloke in wellies, with a face like weathered granite and a grin wider than the Atlantic.

“New here, eh? You’ll love it, but mind the pasties – they’ll ruin you for life,” he chuckled, handing me a steaming one from his van, fresh from Bude’s bakery. We got chatting over mugs of tea on the deck, him regaling me with tales of the 1990s storms that battered the cliffs. “Saw a caravan float right past the breakwater once – proper Jobsworth, that was!” His laugh was infectious, all gravelly and genuine, and before I knew it, I was hooked on his stories of smuggling ghosts from the old wreckers’ days. Mick’s the sort who makes you feel like you’ve known him forever; he even tipped me off on the best spot for sunset watching down at Black Rock.

No sooner had he trundled off than in wandered Doris from the neighbouring farm – she’d spotted my car and reckoned I might need eggs. “Fresh as a daisy, love, from my girls,” she beamed, plonking a carton down with a conspiratorial wink. Doris is a force: silver hair in a bun, apron smeared with flour, and opinions sharper than a pasty knife. Over a natter in the roundhouse kitchen (which is kitted out like a dream, with a wood-burner and sea views), she launched into her feud with the seagulls. “Bloody pirates, they are! Stole my best knickers off the line last week – flapped off towards Widemouth Bay with ’em!” I nearly choked on my tea, picturing it. She’s lived here 50 years, knows every inch of the coast path within a couple of miles, and reckons the roundhouse was built by a Victorian eccentric who fancied himself a druid. “Fits, don’t it? All round and mystical.”

As the afternoon sun dipped, I ambled down to the beach, and who should I bump into but young Tom, the surfer lad from the beach café. He’s proper Bude-born, with sun-bleached hair and a board under his arm, serving up cream teas with a side of banter. “First time at the Roundhouse? You’re in for a treat – but don’t let Doris near the surf, she’ll knit you a wetsuit!” We yakked about the waves at Summerleaze, him warning me off the rip tides with the enthusiasm of a local evangelist. Tom’s got that easy Cornish charm, the kind that makes you linger over a scone, swapping stories of childhood crab hunts in the rock pools.

Sitting there later, hot tub bubbling as the light faded over the cliffs, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Amid all the laughter and larger-than-life tales, I realised how these encounters – fleeting as they were – cut through the usual holiday rush. In a world of screens and small talk, Mick’s yarns, Doris’s mischief, and Tom’s waves felt like a tonic. The Secret Roundhouse wasn’t just bricks and mortar; it was a portal to Cornwall’s beating heart, one quirky chat at a time. Can’t wait to go back.
