About Cornwall
I finally made it to The Ocean Room Roundhouse near Bude in Cornwall after a bit of a faff on the drive down. Picture this: I'd packed the car the night before, all smug about beating the weekend traffic, only for my sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Exeter. It kept insisting on a shortcut through some muddy farm track that turned out to be a proper quagmire after the recent rain. Fifteen minutes of reversing with hedges scraping the sides and me swearing like a proper muppet, and I was back on the A30, covered in a light dusting of Cornish clay. Still, by late afternoon, I rolled up to the lodge, and any lingering grumpiness evaporated the moment I clapped eyes on it.

Tucked away in a serene spot just outside Bude – we're talking a hop and a skip from the beach, no more than a couple of miles – this roundhouse is the stuff of lazy holiday dreams. It's got that perfect Scandi-cosy vibe with its circular design, all wood and glass curving round like a hobbit hole on steroids. I parked up, hauled my bag inside, and was greeted by the cosiest open-plan living space you've ever seen. A wood-burning stove (already stocked, bless the hosts), squishy sofas piled with blankets, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the garden that rolls out towards glimpses of the sea. First impressions? Absolute bliss. No check-in queue, no lift music – just me, a welcome note, and a bottle of local cider chilling in the fridge.

Day one was all about settling in and doing precisely bugger all, which is my idea of heaven. I dumped my stuff, brewed a massive mug of tea, and flopped onto the sofa with a dog-eared paperback I'd been meaning to crack open for months. The garden's a riot of colour even in early autumn – wildflowers, a hammock swaying gently, and those quirky round benches perfect for perching with a cuppa. I spent hours there, feet up, watching clouds scud across the sky and the odd seagull having a nosey. It's funny how, back home, my brain's always buzzing with to-do lists, but here? Time just stretches out. No rush, no agenda. I chuckled to myself thinking of mates who'd be off hiking the coastal path by now; me, I was content with the joy of inertia.

By evening, hunger nudged me into action – sort of. A gentle wander down to Bude's Summerleaze Beach, maybe a ten-minute drive, for fish and chips wrapped in paper, eaten on a bench overlooking the waves crashing in. The sea air was crisp, salty, with that proper Atlantic roar that makes you feel alive without trying. Back at the lodge, I lit the stove, cracked open that cider, and let the warmth wrap around me like a hug. Staring into the flames, I had one of those quiet moments of reflection: life's so frantic sometimes, innit? Chasing deadlines and scrolling endlessly. This place reminded me there's magic in slowing right down, in savouring the small stuff – the creak of the hammock, the rustle of pages, the distant call of gulls.

Day two blurred into more of the same gorgeous nothing. Morning coffee in the garden, watching dew sparkle on the grass. A lazy amble along the beach to collect a few shells – nothing strenuous, just padding along the sand with the tide nipping at my toes. Afternoon? Back to the sofa for more reading, interrupted only by dozing off under a blanket. The lodge's got this wraparound deck that's pure genius for sunset gazing; I perched there with a GandT, marvelling at how the sky turned from gold to pink over the horizon. No grand adventures, no Instagram frenzy – just me, pottering, breathing deep, and feeling utterly recharged by the sheer luxury of lounging.

On my third morning, before packing up, I took one last turn around the garden, hammock-swinging and pondering how three days of sweet FA had mended something in me. The Ocean Room Roundhouse isn't about ticking boxes; it's a love letter to loafing in style. If you're after Cornwall without the car park chaos, this is your spot. I drove off grinning, already plotting a return to do even less.
