About Cornwall
I finally made it to The Cabin near Torpoint in Cornwall after what felt like the scenic route from hell. I'd set off from Plymouth early that drizzly Friday morning, buzzing with excitement for my three-day escape, sat nav primed and thermos of tea at the ready. But no, typical me – about five miles out, I took a wrong turn down a narrow lane that dead-ended at a muddy farm gate. Cue the classic comedy of errors: reversing with wing mirrors clipped by brambles, my little hatchback splattered in Cornish clay like it'd been mud-wrestling. "Brilliant," I muttered, laughing at myself as I dabbed at the windscreen with a soggy tissue. Ten minutes later, covered in a light sheen of panic sweat, I pulled up to the cabin's gravel drive, heart still thumping from the detour.

Stepping out, the chaos melted away. There it was, this cosy little wooden haven tucked into a quiet spot just outside Torpoint, with the gentle hum of the River Tamar not far off. The air hit me first – that fresh, salty tang mixed with wild gorse and damp earth, proper Cornwall breathing life into my city-weary lungs. I fumbled the key from the lockbox (post-mishap hands still shaky), and pushed open the door to a waft of pine and welcome. Inside, it was pure charm: low-beamed ceilings, a squishy sofa piled with cushions begging for a collapse, and a wood-burning stove already set with kindling, as if saying, "Sit down, you daft sod, you've earned it."

First impressions? Absolute bliss after my arrival farce. I dumped my bags and beelined for the kitchenette – compact but kitted out with everything a solo traveller needs: a retro kettle for a proper builder's brew, and a fridge stocked with local milk that tasted like it came straight from a Tamar Valley farm. Peeking out the window, the garden wrapped around like a hug, wildflowers nodding in the breeze and a couple of bird feeders twitching with robins. No grand views of the Eden Project or anything flash – this was understated Cornwall magic, the kind where you hear lapping water and spot the odd heron fishing in the creek nearby. I chuckled thinking how my muddy car matched the rugged vibe perfectly.

Wandering the plot, I discovered the hot tub peeking from its sheltered nook – oh yes, that was calling my name for later, bubbles and a GandT under the stars. But it was the little touches that sealed it: the fairy lights strung along the porch (twinkly even in daylight), a stack of board games on a shelf (Scrabble for rainy evenings), and outside, a fire pit ringed with Adirondack chairs, ready for marshmallows if the mood struck. I fired up the stove, flames crackling to life as I toasted some pasties I'd grabbed from a Torpoint bakery en route – flaky, proper Cornish, stuffed with beef and spud. Sat there munching, feet up, I reflected gently on how daft it is rushing through life back home. Here, in this unpretentious cabin bubble, the small stuff – like a wrong turn and a splattered car – strips away the noise, leaving just you, the woodsmoke, and a rare moment of proper peace.

By teatime, with the sun dipping low and painting the Tamar estuary gold, I was already plotting lazy walks along the waterside paths or maybe a potter to nearby Cawsand for pasties round two. The Cabin didn't just feel like a holiday spot; it felt like slipping into an old friend's spare room, mishaps and all. If you're after that authentic Cornwall fix without the crowds – think salty air, simple joys, and zero pretension – this is your spot. My arrival might've been a right faff, but those first impressions? They'll linger long after the clay's washed off.
