About Cornwall
I finally made it to Spa Retreat 2 near Hayle in Cornwall after what felt like the scenic route from hell. I'd set off from London full of beans, dreaming of salty sea air and a proper unwind, but about two hours in, just past Exeter, I managed to spill an entire thermos of builder's tea all over my passenger seat. Sod's law, right? The A30 was chock-a-block with holiday traffic, lorries belching fumes, and me faffing about with soggy trousers and a carrier bag for the spill. By the time I hit Cornwall proper, with those classic granite hedges flashing by and the first whiff of the ocean, I was knackered, sticky, and swearing like a trooper. But honestly, that daft mishap made the arrival at the retreat feel like striking gold.

Pulling up to the place around teatime, I was gobsmacked. Tucked away in a quiet spot just a stone's throw from Hayle beach, Spa Retreat 2 is one of those dreamy little cottages that Cornwall does so well – all whitewashed walls, slate roof, and a cheeky hot tub bubbling away in the private garden like it knew I needed it. The sat nav had a right old paddy on the narrow lanes, beeping like a demented bird, but once I parked (after a three-point turn that nearly had the neighbours peering out), it was pure bliss. The owner, a lovely chap called Mike, was there to greet me with a Cornish pasty still warm from the oven – proper job, stuffed with beef and swede, none of your tourist tat. "Welcome to paradise," he grinned, handing over the keys. I nearly hugged him.

Stepping inside, the chaos of the drive melted away. The open-plan living space is spot on – cosy lounge with a massive telly, squishy sofas begging for a kip, and a kitchen kitted out with everything you'd need for a fry-up or a cheeky GandT. That wood-burning stove? Absolute hero; I had it roaring in minutes, filling the air with that smoky, homely scent. Upstairs, the bedrooms are a treat – mine had a king-sized bed piled high with crisp white linens and views straight out to the dunes. But the real star? The en-suite spa bathroom. I'm talking rainfall shower that could wash away a week's worth of London grime, a deep soak tub, and heated floors underfoot. I stood there in my pants, dripping tea stains and all, thinking, "This is what holidays are for."

First impressions? Bloody marvellous. I cracked open a bottle of local Rattler cider (grabbed from the offy down the road) and flopped into the hot tub as the sun dipped low over the Hayle estuary. The jets were thumping away my travel kinks, and seals were barking in the distance – proper wild Cornwall vibes without the crowds. It's funny, innit? I rock up in a flap, trousers ruined, heart racing from the drive, and within half an hour, I'm floating like a contented hippo, watching the sky turn pink. Made me reflect a bit, actually. Life's always chucking these little mishaps at you – spilled tea, traffic jams – but places like this? They remind you to let it go, breathe deep, and just be. No faffing about with grand plans; just me, the spa, and three days of doing bugger all except maybe a wander to the beach tomorrow.

That first evening, I rustled up some scampi and chips from the freezer stash Mike left (thoughtful sod), munched it on the patio under fairy lights, and listened to the waves crashing. No signal drama either – the Wi-Fi's solid if you need it, but who bothers? The garden's private and lush, with lavender and herbs brushing your legs, and that hot tub glowing like a beacon. If arrival chaos is the price for this kind of first-night magic, sign me up every time. Spa Retreat 2 isn't just a holiday let; it's a bloody reset button. Can't wait to see what day two brings, but right now, this is spot on.
