About Cornwall
I finally made it to Sandymouth Lodge after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive down to Cornwall. Picture this: I'd set off from Bristol full of beans, Spotify playlist blasting some classic Britpop, dreaming of pasties and pasty-white beaches. But no, about two hours in, just past Exeter on the A30, I managed to spill an entire thermos of builder's tea all over the passenger seat. Cue swearing at the dashboard, a frantic roadside mop-up with half a pack of wet wipes, and my jeans looking like I'd auditioned for a role in a disaster movie. "Brilliant start, mate," I muttered to myself, arriving at the lodge just as the sun dipped low over the dunes, feeling more than a bit windswept and knackered.

Pulling up to Sandymouth Lodge in Bude, though, all that chaos melted away like clotted cream on a scone. It's this proper gem of a detached lodge tucked right into the Sandymouth Bay holiday park, surrounded by nothing but rolling dunes and the endless crash of Atlantic waves. I parked on the gravel drive – still steaming from my tea fiasco – and there she was: a cosy two-bedroom haven with a pitched roof, wooden cladding that screams "get cosy inside," and those big windows promising sea views that'd make your heart skip. The key safe was a doddle to crack (thank goodness, after my day), and stepping over the threshold? Pure magic.

First impressions hit like a warm pasty hug. The open-plan living space is spot-on for a solo wanderer like me – or a family, mind – with a wood-burning stove begging for a fire (logs provided, phew), and a kitchen kitted out with everything from a Nespresso machine to a full-size cooker. I dumped my bags, kicked off my soggy trainers, and beelined for the French doors leading to the private decking. Bloody hell, the view! Sandymouth Beach stretched out below, all golden sands fringed by black rocks and that crisp Cornish sea air whipping in. Seals were bobbing about in the bay – proper wildlife spotting without even trying. I cracked open a tin from the fridge (welcome pack with milk, bread, and butter – thoughtful touch), and just sat there, feet up on the picnic bench, watching the sunset paint the sky in pinks and oranges. Who needs a spa when you've got this?

Wandering round, I couldn't stop grinning at the little details. The bedrooms are snug as a bug, with crisp white duvets and those seaside-y prints on the walls. Master one's got an en-suite with a rainfall shower that I tested pronto – hot water galore, no faffing with switches. Downstairs loo was immaculate too, and the whole place smelled fresh, like sea salt and pine cleaner. Outside, the enclosed garden's perfect for a barbie or just lounging with a book, and it's literally a two-minute stagger to the beach path. I nipped down for a gander as dusk fell – empty sands, waves lapping, not a soul in sight. Felt like I'd stumbled into my own private Eden.

That tea-spill mishap? It had me reflecting a tad as I sipped my brew on the deck, waves whooshing below. Life's full of these daft cock-ups, innit? Spill the tea, arrive in a flap, but then bam – here's this cracking lodge reminding you why you bothered with the drive. In that moment, staring out at the Cornish coast, all stresses from work and the daily grind just fizzled out. Sandymouth Lodge isn't flash; it's real, welcoming, and dead central for Bude's vibes without the BandB bustle. If you're after first-night bliss after a rubbish journey, this is your spot. Can't wait to explore more tomorrow, but honestly, arriving here was the highlight already.
