About Cornwall
Pulling up to Northcott Hut just as dusk settled was pure magic. Tucked away in a quiet spot overlooking the coast, it’s one of those unassuming gems that doesn’t shout about itself. No grand driveway, just a gravel patch and this cosy little wooden hut with a veranda that screams “put your feet up”. I fumbled the key in the lock, half-expecting a spider convention inside, but nah – it was spotless, with a wood-burner ready to roar and windows framing the sea like a living painting. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. I dumped my bags, cracked open a tin of Cornish pasty (grabbed from a roadside van en route), and just breathed it all in. That first evening, I decided to wander – no map, no plan, just following my nose down the unmarked paths snaking from the hut. Cornwall’s got this knack for hiding its best bits, doesn’t it? Within minutes, I stumbled on a secret cove that doesn’t even make the tourist apps. Narrow steps carved into the cliffs led down to a pebbled beach lapped by waves that glowed under the fading light. Not a soul around – just me, a few seals barking in the distance, and the sort of peace that makes city life feel like a bad dream. I sat on a driftwood log, sipping tea from a subpar borrowed mug, and chuckled at how getting lost had gifted me this. Next morning, still riding that high, I laced up my boots for more accidental exploring. A wrong turn off the coastal path – or was it deliberate? – spat me out at an overgrown inlet I’d never heard of. Overhung with wildflowers and gorse, it was a proper hidden gem, with rock pools teeming with anemones and crabs scuttling about like they owned the place. I poked around for hours, finding a nook perfect for paddling, the water so clear I could see tiny fish darting below. Light humour kicked in when I slipped on seaweed and ended up arse-over-tit in a shallow pool – soaked to the skin, laughing like a drain. “Welcome to Cornwall,” I muttered, wringing out my socks. No one to see, thank God, but it was the sort of daft mishap that makes these trips unforgettable. By day two, I was hooked on the hut’s vibe – that veranda became my command centre for plotting “lost” adventures. Another wander led to a forgotten smugglers’ cave mouth, half-buried in dunes, where the air smelled of salt and secrets. I didn’t go far in (health and safety, innit?), but peering inside felt like uncovering a bit of Cornwall’s wild history. Lunch was a scavenged picnic of local fudge and cider from a nearby honesty box farm shop I’d blundered upon – serendipity at its sweetest. Sitting there on the third evening, feet up with the sea whispering below, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life back home’s a treadmill of deadlines and drudgery, but here, getting gloriously lost had stripped it all back. Northcott Hut isn’t about grand plans; it’s the launchpad for these off-the-beaten-track joys – the coves, caves, and corners that reward the wanderer. If you fancy ditching the crowds for proper Cornish soul, book it. Just don’t forget your mug. |
